Nothing prevents you from being sued. Not a waiver, not insurance, nothing.

However you can minimize risk, which is what a waiver and insurance do. In the US you can also form a corporation, or Limited Liability company to help protect your personal assets.

realize if you don't have personal assets then you don't need insurance really as you have very little risk of losing that which you do not have.

Other things is taking responsibilty, if someone is injured, apologizing and trying to take steps to help solve the problem or help the person often can help keep you out of court. Happy people that think you care don't usually sue.

In missouri there is a law that limits liability in sporting events, so that is some help, but every state is different.

Now, nothing limits negligence, so it is important that you know what you teach very well and make sure you do it in a safe and proficient manner.

Have good insurance, they do not need a good reason to sue; people just do.

Don't be left alone with a student, always have a witness on hand.

As for taking responsibility, be aware that when you acknowledge fault you are opening up a can of worms that you may want to keep closed. I'm all for integrity, but protect yourself first. Make it rite, then if all else fails you can make have a verbal discussion and see what it would take to make the other party happy. But don't make a habit of caving, reputation will follow and other suits will also.
