  • Straight Blast

    Hello,

Burton has mentioned that Wing Chun instructor Hawkins Cheung (hope I spelled his name right) dosen't like the Wing Chun way of Straight Blasting.
I am very interessted in hearing what your (the JKDU instructors) exsperience is with this. Do you prefer the boxing straight blast ?

Also, how importiant is the straight blast in your training ? Do you just cover it from time to time, or is it a very "high priority" in your training ?

    Thanks, Michael.

    hi michael,
how are you??? i hope all it's ok in denmark!!!!

    well, the straightblast......
i usually say to my students that it is a very good tool but if you use it well and with the right timing.....considering it separately, it is not a so difficult tecnique, what is hard to mastering, for be able to apply it very well, is the timing that you need to insert it and to apply it in fighting!!!!!
i use both the two ways, thanks to sifu Burton i discovered the boxe straight blast.
i think that both have advantages and disadvantages, like all the tecniques naturally......
personally i feel more power given by the legs mouvement in the regular straight blast using the run mouvement of the legs (not the classical wing chun footwork, too static!), i prefer to use it in situations like: after a jeet tek, a cover, a gunting, after a good thai kick to my opponent leg or a straight kick to the groin.........i feel it more dynamic considering the position of my body e the pressure that i give running versus the opponent related to the concept of the economy of motion applied with speed, power and balance......
considering the position of my body and the body mechanic, i prefer to use the boxe straight blast starting from a middle range situation or when i am boxing my opponent.

    ciao from italy....

Both straight blasts can work, it is just that the boxing blast usually generates much more power. Filippo can get a lot of power from the regular blast, because he is a big, strong guy. The regular blast does work, especially when very close to your opponent, as Filippo pointed out. I will be seeing Michael in a few days, and Filippo in about a week. Enjoy!

What are the main disadvantages of the straight blast (the best counters, etc..)

knowing the counter to something usually allows me to perform better....Like knowing escapes from the mount helps me to hold the position better, etc..

        Any info is appreciated!
