  • Attention Burton

    Hello Burton,

after reading the latest news letter I can see you must be VERY busy. But if you have time, could you please tell us more about the Kali program?

How is it different than the weapons program that is already a part of JKDU?

    Thank you for your time,

    -Rick

To the best of my knowledge, the new Kali system will focus entirely on forms. We have decided that sparring is simply too dangerous and it gets us all sweaty. Phase 1 students will be required to learn the first 200 of the total 1000 forms. Also, you will need to put an order in for your new silver-lamé uniform with sequin rank sash. You can see Shelton modeling it in the next video (the one where I shoot fire out of my sticks ). You will also need to order your glow-in-the-dark sticks from the Century catalog.

      Of course, I jest...
I really don't know what Burton will include in the new program, but I am sure it will be first-rate. I am extremely thankful that I have been able to train under an instructor as intellectually honest as Burton. The truth is usually hard to find and often harder to accept and I am thankful that Burt doesn't waste our time with impractical technique, but rather continually strives for what is realistic and functional. Nietzsche talks about "philosophizing with a hammer" -- we must give those unquestioned ideals that have long been accepted as true a good, solid whack and see if they stand up to the challenge. JKDU uses this same approach with martial arts, and those techniques and strategies that do not stand up to the test of functionality are thankfully discarded.

"Everyone who observes himself doubting observes a truth, and about that which he observes he is certain; therefore he is certain about a truth" -St. Augustine
"To believe in earnest, we must first begin by doubting." -Stanislaus I
