  • Beginner (Hi)

    Hi.

I am new to boxing. I've had about 4 boxing lessons thus far. I started because it was something I've always wanted to try. I'm also a bit meak and clumsy and thought this would be a good way to get over that.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying my lessons with the exception of one problem. Afterwards, the pinky side of my hands are left very sore and stay that way for several days.

I do wear hand wraps and I'm trying to be concious of how I land with my punches. What are other things I can do for the pain? I wouldn't mind it so much but it hinders how hard I want to hit and it also hinders weightlifting I do on other days.

    Thanks.

You have to concentrate on hitting the bag with you first centered or even offset so your bigger knuckles take the punishment. Or you could just keep doing what you are doing, it might take a little bit but your knuckles will toughen up. And once that happens you are good to go.

Its nice to have strong knuckles, just in case you actually have to throw a real punch some day.

Well, you could go watch Kill Bill Vol. 2 to see how Beatrix Kiddo was able to strengthen her knuckles. Too bad Pai Mai is dead, he could've made a fortune by selling some instructionals. I apologize, in advance, for the wisecracks.

Yeah man those punches made bruce lee look like a pussy(one inch punch.....). She broke through the coffin then flew out of the ground. Now that is power.

Thanks for the, er, feedback. My flying skills are pretty good, guess I just need to work on those punches.

Yeah...especially if you want to BREAK your knuckles or maybe your fingers punching some dude's hard as a rock head with your BARE fist and knuckles. Let's not forget, boxers wrap their hands and put them inside gloves for a REASON, if you dont believe me, just ask Mike Tyson how he felt when he hit Mitch Green upside the head in a streetfight without gloves.THe wisest course of action is to use slaps, claws, heel palms and knife hands to the face if you plan on hitting the head without gloves.

true but did you see mitch's eye

Boxer’s today focus way to much on pin pointing there knuckles as oppose to hitting correctly ( they want the end results of the punch that causes the knockout, but lose the mechanics along the way). The wraps and the gloves help you in case you make a mistake. But in the old day of Bare Knuckle cats would throw down for hours with little or no damage to their hands" Bill Richmond". So focus hit first take your time and place your fist on the bag then push through the bag by turning the fist over this is a vertical cork screw punch as your timing increases with the proper distance, and alignment you can throw your punch the way cats do today without injuring your hands or wrist. As hitting the bag this way will build up your wrist and fist like shock absorber and you’ll feel less pain when you hit with power and by going slow you can catch your self making mistakes and thus correct them on the spot. Remember that the key to a good punch is to get the proper body mechanic down first then increase you’re throwing power. Push ups on your Knuckles then bounce on them, and dips on the ground where you fall back from a squatting position then palm out on the ground catching your self your elbows should bend slightly. This will strengthen your wrist there are more rules for punching but this get you started now.
                Hope this helps.
