Simple.
you're probably the type of person who asks for wasabi and chop sticks at a Thai restraunt!
Y'know I've HEARD that there is actually a relationship between the two though none are necessary for a username, of course. Y'know ... buddhism and the Samurai ethos that was very zen(buddhist) oriented? But then ... you knew that.

Oh.....You're alluding to the supposed connection between Cha'an Buddhism (early Zen), Bodhidharma/Dharuma, and the proliferation of martial arts to the early Shaolin temple...and later the spread to Japan of techniques...right?
Well...other than that there is absolutely NO historiographical connection between the Shaolin monks and the Japanese code of honor (Bushido).

Survey says....
"According to statistics published by the [Japan] Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1998, 49.2 percent of citizens adhered to Buddhism, 44.7 percent to Shintoism, 5.3 percent to so-called "new" religions, and 0.8 percent to Christianity.
However, a 1996 Jiji Press Service poll showed that 46.6 percent of the population identified themselves with no particular religious group, 44.3 percent choose Buddhism, 3.2 percent Shintoism, 3.1 percent "new" religions, and 1.0 percent Christianity.
A 1994 poll indicated that less than 7 percent of the population regularly took part in formal religious services. Shintoism and Buddhism are not mutually exclusive religions; most members claim to observe both."
according to these statistics the japanese dont seem to care...
some religions seem to intermix...some just dont care....

What does Zen Buddhism have to do with Bushido?
By the way, BoarSpear, why are you citing contemporaneous studies?
It would make more sense to compare estimates dating back to the fuedal era.
Bushido is, for all intents and purposes dead. It died, if not after the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, then with the death of the last true Japanese nationalist (Yukio Mishima).

The fact that you weren't original enough to come up with a username or realize how potentially stupid it is to use your given name on an internet discussion forum ... is a bit disconcerting.
The fact that you somehow think that everyone who created a username is a bitch ... well, you should be hiding your identity ... you are ignorant.

Well, Zen Buddhism was as relevant to most Samurai as Christianity is to America's soldiers today ... it was used by them as it is today for it's adherents ... it calms the mind so that one can perform as you're capable and helps to inspire thought. Bushido is what is generally regarded as the code of the Samurai. Zen Buddhism, the way of regarding Life, is inherent in bushido.
Of course, there were also Christian samurai. Even they probably studided Zen.
As far as bushido being dead today; for most people it never was alive. They don't really understand it and think it's just some macho single mindedness. Bushido can be observed daily ... if one knows how to recognize it. Just like the Shaolin precepts. You don't have to be a monk to live as one of the Shaolin.

Just because you read a Eiji Yoshikawa book doesn't make you an expert, hommie. You are drawing parallels between two different things. Just because there may be similarities DOES NOT mean the two are one.
And why should I hide my name?
