  • Tarver KO's Jones jr.!

Your source for Minnesota news today. Read articles, view photos or watch videos about news in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, St. Cloud, Rochester, and beyond.

I read several recounts of the fight. Some boxing journalists say that RJ jr is loosing his touch. Looks like Tarver's power got to him.

Still, RJ jr. is one of the most technically talented light heavyweights out there. You can't forget how he TKO'd Ruiz (239lbs) while weighing in at 193.

There's allways someone better than you. I guess its time ofr Tarver to share the limelight. Jones was talking about a re-match.

I watched the fight and thought Roy Jones was dominating until Tarver got in the roundhouse. Tarver wasnt using his hieght very well and I felt Jones was doing a good job to keep him under pressure. It just goes to show you all it takes is one punch. Maybe Roy was getting a bit too cocky. Then again so was Ali and that's what made him great. Just my thoughts.

    Sincerly,

It just goes to show that the saying is true: "Anything can happen in boxing." RJJ is one of the greatest; however, I don't think having to lose weight for light-heavy weight division is benefiting him any. That and Tarver just had his number Sat. night. There surely will be a re-match - right now they are 1-1 with eachother.

A rematch is unlikely. After the fight they asked Roy if he wanted a rematch and he said he wasn't interested in fighting Tarver again. He said he was possibly considering going up to the heavyweights.

Tarver is naturally bigger and could go heavyweight as well. Maybe they will meet there. Who knows. I know that either he mentioned the heavy's or the announcers said that may he might move up. I can't remember who said it. But it would be interesting to see them fight at a heavier weight.

Roy didn't really do much. He had a few fast spurts but didn't get anything done. Tarvers a lefty and they're not easy to fight. They're awkward and don't look like they're doing much and then blam, he steps right and his left is right in the pocket.

Should of read your own article.

"Jones said he would not fight Tarver again, and said he might move back to heavyweight for possible fights against Mike Tyson or Vitali Klitschko."

"I would rather fight heavyweights,'' Jones said

It seems like Jones got his first taste of canvas and who knows maybe it will benifit him in the long run. Sometimes we underestimate how much of an advantage it is to be a lefty, especially in a sport where all it takes is one good shot to the button. I guess I am a bit bias for Roy Jones Jr. because I love his tactical style. I think it would be pretty interesting to see both fighters in the heavywieghts.

If you read it then you probably didn't get to see it. Roy was hit hard.

I watched it on ppv and Jones was dominating, Tarver was in a turtle position, RJJ went of balance for one second and blam! A left hook right to the button.

He didn't TKO Ruiz he won by unamious decision, Roy just got caught with a very hard accurate counter, protect your chin, remember always keep your guard up

Roy was faster but that was it. He didn't get anything accomplished and there was no lucky shot. Roy wasn't off balance.

To fight a south paw a conventional fighter will step left to avoid the power shot. Re-play the fight. Tarver did opposite. He stepped outward to the right. There was no avoiding his left.

Fella, Fella's Roy was doing everything he needed to do in the fight. He was the aggressor he landed more shots, body and head.

What happen is he landed a nice shot off on Taverns and relaxed or got laxed (drop the right guarding his chin just a tad) for a momement and got popped.

Like in basketball he was running around in the paint, when your in the paint (up close) you shoot or you get out, he did neither relaxed after his punch and caught one himself.

That was an "Any Given Sunday" punch; not lucky but it shouldnt have happen.

I think you're the only one that saw that fight! Just watch it again. It was to short to not enough action to talk about domination.

It wasn't a lucky punch. Read my post aboout him stepping right and then watch the second round. He did exactly what he should do (a lefty fighting a righty).

It was a clean knock out and Roy said specifically he did not have an intersted in fighting Tarver again. If it was luck it would have said Hell yea when the anouncer asked if he wanted a re-match!

My typo's must have thrown you off. I didnt say Roy dominated the fight, I agree with you, the first and second rounds are those feel out rounds. I said Roy was the aggressor landing more punches. The fight would have and should have continued had Roy followup up his punch, coverup after it or stuck and moved.

No it wasnt (WAS NOT ) a lucky punch, the punch was legit, Roy got sloppy or cocky or both. Whatch that last punch and ask yourself before it was thrown what should Roy have been doing, after landing his left on Tarver's cheek". You will see a quick laps in judgement ie "Cocky/Sloppy"

I don't have a tape of the fight, nor did I see it, but from my boxing training I take it that Roy let his right hand down and was trying to show off to Tarver or something to that order.
