  • Left hand punching help

    Hey guys:

Today I was punching up the old wave master, and I noticed my punches with the left hand sucked. How did I know? Well my left wrist is hurting, and everytime I punched the bag it hurt. Any reccomendations to how to punch with my left hand better to avoid injuries?

    Thank you

So, you mean you can punch thin air, but can't punch anything harder........

Anyway. Build up your wrists. Gripping tennis balls etc etc. And ensure your technique is good.

Personally I have left punching behind. The hand was just not designed to do it, and I have taken up nastier hand positions that put me at less risk of injury, and any opponent at more.

Just curious but what are those hand positions? And do you mean your doing it for self defense or for sport environment?

            I'm pure self defence orientated.

Hand positions include the imaginitively entitled "Tiger's Claw". This is essentially a palm heel strike, but the fingers are curled over to allow an incidental strike to the eyes. Targets are anywhere in the lower face and, in another variation, under the chin. Can also be done as a hook.

Axe Hand, also called Knife hand or shuto. The old favourite "Karate Chop!", but done with lots of body action, not the dinky little flick of James Bond movies. Go for the throat, sides/back of neck, jaw line, temple.

Finger jab - mainly to the eyes.

Hammer fist. Make a fist as normal, but strike with the padded end near to the little finger. Onto the nose, jaw or collar bone.

Elbow - forwards or backwards. Hit hard, hit anywhere. Heads always a good start though.

Thats a selection. There are other types of blow too. And all of them are nastier than the punch for a real go. And none of them result in you getting a broken hand.

this is how we did it anyhow
the palmheel (teisho or shotei) can be used in anyway the fist can be used
Hook, cross, strait, swinging or uppercut, it doesn't matter

you must haveloved Pancrase fights and in the early UFC, the no gloved fighters

when the knifehand comes from the outside, it can do damage espaecialy when done with the rearhand
coming from the inside it can only be used in a defending fashion

Finger jab - mainly to the eyes.
unless you spend way too much time on strengthening the fingers, if you keep the hand ( not the fingers itself) bend at the knuckles, it might work to other softparts of the body

              Groin?

dono if all are nastier than the fistpunch in general but but they are compared to the punch to the head, way to much chance of hard on hard contact there and as a result chance of getting damaged
On the other hand, a liverhook, I prefer to do that with a fist

BTW " a punch" like the japanese Tsuki, doesn't mean that it is done with the fist

I did like those early fights. See what happened to Gerard Gordeau when he punched?

I entered an interclub "shoot" competition in 96. I was 32 and my cocky opponent 19. The only hand strike to the head was circular slapping motions with the palm. He arrogantly kept his guard down. I arrogantly knocked him out. Great fun.

You are wrong with the Axe Hand. Either delivery will cause damage.

For fingers I slightly curl the fingers and support them with the thumb. You'd be surprised at the impact they can take but, of course, I target the eyes.

Yes, hammer fist can be used on the groin, as can the axe and the tigers. I never meant this to be a definitive piece!

By the way, a "punch" DOES mean the fist...... Its my language after all........

Bri, I was in the assumption your language was English
Punch a hole into something, has nothing to do with fists, does it? Not to mention a bowl of punch

In Dutch punch is Stoot but I can also translate that back into english as Thrust

btw the fingerjab, we place the thumb also on the finger for support

Running English through Dutch, and then using a slightly different translation back again doesn't count - unless you're punch drunk on punch in a punchy punch and judy punch up min the punch bowl......

Why is the way we're responding so difficult to understand? You come on hear behaving quite arrogantly, and writing as though you know everything, but then you ask a very basic question.
because he is obviously a kiddie, probably wondering what Tux to wear for his prom.

Infinite possibilities for humorous inuendo with the ladies....especially on the part of planting the 'big hands' thought in their mind...lol

That's a good method of hooking up.
