I actually did some free sparring today with some of my younger Marines. I wore them out with some 'sand bag' PT before hand and then went 1 minute with each of them straight. So I got a 5 minute workout while they got a chance to spar a bit. Then I let them go at it for a minute each on each other. After everyone went once I kicked it up to 2 minutes a piece and we all went round robin again. It was a good way to start my day! We finished up the morning reviewing some of their ground fighting and other striking techniques.
As for the article, yeah it went in more depth as far as what exercises it recommended for boxing strength. I just summarized the main points. If others are interested and want to read it I can post the whole article. Or maybe find a link to M&F....anyways, you are right, nothing will make up for proper training under an instructor or at a decent gym!
HtKar, I couldn't agree more. I have a little stress ball that I use some times when I shadow box. When I throw a punch out I squeeze it when my arm is extended. That way I can simulate getting the full flex of my arm and forearms muscles right at the moment of impact. I try to keep my hands and arms loose until the moment of impact. Squeezing the stress ball and arms at extension helps me achieve this.

Most people think that a punch is all forarm and tricep, and that is a lot of it, but the grabbing itself is a lot of bicep, and many little muscles throughout your arm. If you make a grabbing action, you can punch with much more force
