Boxing is good, but it's always better to ground and pound! Most street fights wind up on the ground. A website won't teach you shit about how to fight, the actual experience will. But, it depends on what type of gyms are around and how far you are willing to go.

this easy...people after you??
m'kay...get a good, realtivey sturdy sock...fill with a pool ball.
Or a roll of quarters makes a good fist load.
Or...and this one's really fun...
A brick.
they start shit, take the closest guy and just start hammering away.

YEAH, THAT!!
On a related note there are programs like RMCAT and FAST Defence for personal protection that teach you things you won't learn in a boxing gym (or on the mat)

Boxing for self defense
Boxing has in my opinion, the best sparring around, when watching 2 pro-boxers spar its hard to tell the difference betwenn their "sparring" and actual fighting
Very hard core training. That being said, you also need to know how to elbow, knee, headbutt and Grapple. Both Striking and Grappeling are equally important.
Because at some point your opponent will strike, grab, or grab then strike you.To be one sided is to deny reality. If you can't find any boxing gyms you could try the fairtex mauy thai gym in sanfransisco. You should also find a good grappeling school. Also get a heavy bag, double end bag, ect. to practice on at home. Rodney Kings stret boxing series is a good buy. If you have a friend you can trust then consider sparring with him at home(be careful) Nothing beats training in a good gym or school though.Home training should be in addition too and not instead of gym/school time.

The GLOVES kinda give it away don't you think? While boxing is not without it's share of foul tactics they tend to neglect many other tools. Kick boxing and Judo stuff come in handy too.
Even if you only learn a little bit of Nage-waza you can SLAM most folks hard enough to break teeth, fracture bones or even kill them if they hit a solid object of some kind. Then we can talk about chokes and limb destructions!
Just not on the Boxing board...

Loook for a Krav Maga place... that'll teach you how to **** shit up...
they dont even call it a martial art.. just self defense, its geared towards exactly what you are looking for, and you learn it in a relatively short time.

home training
Start by geting a good bag you can cover the canvas bag with a layer of mat foam and then duck tape if you cant get a good leather one. You do 10 3 minute rounds every work out period. Also the 2 different speed bags on the platform and the one suspended by strech cords from ceiling to floor. PUNCH A LOT VARY THE SPEEDS AND THE POWER. Learn as much as you can from whereever you can. When you find a good boxing gym youll be better prepared. Even if youre in a boxing gym sparring or not these kinds of equipment are neccesary any ways.

Why would you wrap a canvas bag with foam and ducttape?
Having all those bags will help if you already have the basics down, know how to punch, hold your guard, know your footwork and to keep your hands up. Problem is; If he doesnt have good fundamentals all he's going to do is give himself bad habits. Learning how to fight by yourself is not easy. You need someone to give you reinforcement, and you need a sparring partner at least.

Or...if you ever get into a real fight....you don't need to know anything.
Just keep smashing until they stop moving. Real simple.
Most people don't know how to do a martial art, and many of those that do take some sort of BS TMA that couldn't help them against a resisting opponent anyway....so, hit the weights, do the push-ups and crunches, hit a treadmill and do circuits, and practice punching and kicking, and kneeing shit.
And keep your eye on surrounding "tools" that can be used to your advantage. If you keep hitting somebody, chances are they can't recoop very easy, even good fighters can get bum-rushed and sucker-punched.
Above all FIGHT DIRTY. There is no such thing as a fair fight on the street. You have a cd player...choke the fool with your headphones...while smacking him over the head with the player itself, curb check his punk ass, and beat feet before the coffee show up, you know what I mean?
Yeah, mine, it's all about just headbussin' when it's for real.
I bet you, if you just chin checked whatever bitch is starting shit, they'd back down, I mean, most people try to avoid getting into fights, and when they start shit with somebody who just pops them straight off and keeps hitting them, they never play around again.
(It's easy...get close, put your arm around the guy and smile like you're his pal, be like, hey man, I gots something to say...., grab his hair or his ears if his head's bicked, and just start cracking him in the nose and jaw...and then pull his head down into a knee....when he drops, just soccer kick away... play tee ball with his head as the ball and your shin as the bat, no shit.
so, basicly, by giving that guy money, you advertised that you're a mark. Next time, just rally and stomp the ribs when your done. They don't know who you are....so hopefully they won't be able to roll up on you afterward.
Carry a fucking fist-load, or a knife, man....never know what assholes are carrying these days...just don't draw unless you know they have one. Equalizer...oh yeah.

Hard Core Baby
I agree with Garland. Just start swinging and don't stop until the punches get juicy. The next time someone comes up to you talking shit pop him hard, don't say anything just hit him hard, and keep hitting him (just don't do this in front of cops).

lol u guys must live in some shitty areas or something.
Sometimes i wish i had that tenacity though, like fighting instinct.
Anything i can do to like get me in the mindset of its either "me" or him"
cause id like to be more aggresive when sparring, i mean not like dangerous but when sparring im a little on the defensicve side rather than on offnese more. any ideas?
