  • which is more important for the street...offence or defence

    hi all

    question for the boxers

whats more important to you for self defence...boxings offence or defence.

i'd imagine that a boxer would be very difficult for a 'regular joe' to land a clean blow on due to their great head move, ent and footwork, but then again they can also unload bombs if neccessary.
    what do you like best?

I think that street fights need to end fast, you gotta overwhelm the angry drunken haymaker mechine and knock him out. defence is obviously important but in self defence, you wanna use your skills and counter violence with more precise violence and get the **** outa there

      Remember This.

A good defense is a devastating offense. Overwhelm your opponent with strikes so he has no time to react/defend.

boxer: simply tilt head slightly and slip to the outside of the haymaker and counter with a right straight, it's over....but what if he's trying to tackle you?

If you can see it coming, bob and weave and come over the top with a tight hook of your own. You suddenly find yourself going in automatic, things slow down around you and you throw a 5-7 punch barrage that you worked in the gym without even recognizing it.

If it comes from out of nowhere, meaning you don't have alot of time your just going to have to cover it with the old earmuffs (without gloves I guess its forearm ear muffs), roll with it, blast a few in then run away.

offense by far is more important....like stated before a good defense is a devistating offense...If you can avoid that big haymaker then you will be fine...learn a little wrestling while your at it because your boxing skills are only as good as your ability to stay on your feet.

I sorta disagree, I've seen quite a few boxers do a great job of continuing to punch off their back and since they train heavy bags so much their upper body punching power is allot greater than your normal joe, even without boxing's great footwork boxers hit pretty damn hard, i think a boxer would do ok on his back... against the average drunk.

This is the beauty of beating a striker. On his back even a much taller man can not reach your head but you can reach his... If he gives you his arm trying to punch from down there he can't retract it fast enough or far enough to avoid getting it broke. But don't take MY word for it.

He did specify - I'm going to add a piece to this thread before it turns into another 'which is better in the street'.

I submit that the average drunk guy in a bar is going to get killed by most fair to good boxers AND by most fair to good grapplers. Both are tough sports where conditioning is a prerequisite and bumps, bruises, and strains are common events. Both are combat oriented sports where the players are accustomed to contending with close to one-hundred percent resistance opponents.

Isn't it pretty obvious that either of these sports are going to help considerably in a bar-type fight? Neither one may be the end all of street fighting and neither is likely to save you from a hidden knife or a drunken Mirco CroCop; but the average drunk in a bar? I've scuffled with that guy a number of times - mostly he just wants to bump chests for his girlfriend anyway.

Yes, perhaps I should rephrase that......

Mostly he just wants to demonstrate his hardness for his girfriend.

No wait, that isn't it either...

He's trying to demonstrate courage and toughness but does not want to actually fight if he can avoid it without loosing face.

My bad. Thoughts crossed before I was done...
If the drunk thug is on top of a boxer the boxer is in trouble...
