  • Floyd Mayweather Jr. Focus Mitt training technique

    Hey guys.
I've been watching clips over and over of Floyd and Roger Mayweather doing mitt work. It's the most unreal mitt work I've ever seen. There are periods where Floyd and Roger are both up at high speed and it looks like they're just feeding off of eachother. No called out combos or anything. They also seem to go at it pretty fast with both offensive and defensive techniques. When I see most people on the mitts, the pad man calls a combo and the puncher executes then sets back up. When you watch the Mayweathers it's like an endless combo and they could keep flowing all night long.

My question to you guys, does anyone happen to know what the theory behind their pad training is? How its done/executed? Is it all planned out beforehand, or does Floyd just react to what is thrown or shown to him? Hopefully someone has answers because even watching it in slo-mo is proving impossible for me to figure out.

    Thanks!

My guess is that it's all spontaneous and that he's just that good, although the fact that Roger and Floyd know each other so well probably helps. If you have links to those clips I'd love to see them

I've never seen anyone who does mitt training like Floyd Mayweather either. I've seen alot of things, and the way they keep a rhythm going at that speed, all the while keeping the exercise practical.

I've said a long time ago, Floyd Mayweather Sr and Roger are probably the two best trainers today. They both are former fighters and they have a wealth of knowledge.

My take on Mayweather's mitt exercise is one part coordination drill, one part anti- touch and go. In boxing, you don't just come in swinging. You touch the man first. Its supposed to be with a jab, but many fighters paw their jab to feel out the distance and position. If he can touch you a certain amount of times, he feels its time to fire. Mayweather's mitt exercise seems to tell him to react a certain way everytime he's touched. I've noticed his jerk reaction everytime a fighter feints. His head goes back before a punch is thrown, but he sees the way a fighters shoulders move and how his feet setup, which are also indicators of when a fighter will throw.

He's clearly the best right now. He's the third phenom is the last 20 years.

I'm not trying to be an ass when I say this, but I've seen little kids go faster than he does. If you can get ahold of John Brown's Mastering the Mitts, then you'll see what I'm talking about. It really is amazing to watch the speed of these guys. The video isn't too bad. It explains how they do it a little by breaking the technique into pieces, but the audio's bad and it's by far the longest video in the John Brown series.

Little kids faster than the best boxer in the world?...

Shit what are they feeding those kids....

If I had like.. a tenth of Floyd's boxing skills... man... I'd jump for joy haha.

Mayweather is sick, I just hope he doesnt get too cocky, and fall off like some other phenoms in the past.

Which phenoms would you be referring to?

Roy was a phenom. Dropping his hands wasn't his undoing though. Roy Jones Jr went from superwelterweight to heavyweight: an incredible feat. But, he did a very stupid thing. At 35, he went from 175 lbs to about 200lbs of pure muscle. Once he did that, his body went through changes. He won the heavyweight belt, and then made the worst decision of his career: He went back down to 175. He spent millions of dollars to acquire a heavyweight physiqueand ruined it. Not only that, but he lost that 25 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks, which is insane. A lot of people thought we'd see the same Roy in the ring, but many fans knew better. You can't do that to the human body, let alone at 35, and expect to compete at the top level. But he did. He won the first match, but his reflexes were clearly shot, and his reflexes were the cornerstone of his game.

So, even though there was more to it, Roy Jones is still responsible for his own loss. He made stupid decisions out of ego. He had won everything a boxer could dream of, but he decided that he had to do more and more until someone finally caught him. Most of the greats begin to show their age in their mid 30's.

Oh well. The guy is still the best to do it. Sugar Ray Robinson had lost before he was 35 and he had more losses than Roy Jones. And Sugar Ray Robinson is widely regarded as the best ever pound for pound. In years to come, experts will say that Roy achieved more than Robinson career wise.

But I do agree, its not wise to keep your hands down. Even if you are fast enough to react in time, its just showboating.

I went back and watched a little of my Mastering the Mitts video, and the guy that was doing most of the mitt training was Floyds uncle Roger. No wonder those kids were so damn fast. There was another trainer on the video too, and his kids seemed even faster. I guess you have to judge it yourself. Your opinion might be different from mine, but at least this explains a little bit of it.

What kind of things does Roger show on the video? What kind of things does the whole video present? Is it more for the puncher to learn from, or the holder?

Also, I'm trying to doubt you on the kids being fast thing, but I've seen clips of the Mayweather's going faster than that video posted. Just wanted to put that out.

No, I don't doubt it. They probably do go faster. I guess I can't just go on one video, but I just thought I would throw in the whole kid thing to show that anyone can do it with the proper teacher. Roger's a badass teacher...enough said with that.

As for the John Brown video...It just shows Roger with a student or two along with a few other coaches with their kids. The audio is terrible, so you can't even make out what the instructions are. I didn't learn ONE thing from watching that video. To be brutally honest, I barely learned anything from the John Brown series. I'm not trying to thrash on them. I think some people can benifit from them. I just wouldn't recommend those videos to anyone. They're always spending 10-15 minutes plugging their own merchandise.
