  • Sugar Shane Mosley

Now this fight was a bit different than the Harris fight. Not only because Mosley has the bigger name, but he had a much more formidable opponent and still managed give a damn good showing.

Shane Mosley is looking more and more like himself with every fight. I always said that it was a mistake for him to have come up from lightweight. I don't know how many of you watch boxing or are fans of the science, but if you've watched Mosley at lightweight you'd agree that he was a demon there. Literally a punching monster. He was so dominant there but he didn't face any real big names, but its undeniable that his talent was unbelievable.

I thought he should have gone to Jr Welterweight, but he chased the money and went after DLH: the cash cow of boxing. His victory over DLH is what really gave his name star power, but real fans could see that he wasn't the same Mosley from the lightweight division. Mosley lost twice against Forrest and then made the worst decision of his career: To go up in weight to jr middleweight. He isn't big enough to compete with those guys. He was struggling even against Marquez. Two losses to Wright and he finally decided to come back down. But not before he made his presence felt by smokin' Fernando Vargas. Twice.

But in his fight against Luis Collazo, he looked like he's taking steps to back to his former glory. Its hard enough to fight a southpaw as it is, and Collazo is a very good boxer who in truth defeated Ricky Hatton. Mosley looked sharp. Sharper than usual. He was fast. He was confident. The only thing really missing were the blazing combinations, but I'm sure they will come. The fight was by no means a cake walk, but it was definitely a great showing for Shane. The only thing that kind of got on my nerves were the commentators who at times credited Collazo with landing shots when in fact it was Shane who was landing the hard, thudding punches.

Where does Shane Mosley go from here? He turned down a fight with Floyd Mayweather. He turned down a third fight with DLH. What's left for Mosley? Is he going to retire? Could he possibly make the weight at 140 and challenge Hatton or Cotto? Is he looking forward to a showdown with the overrated Antonio Margarito?

What's Shane's deal? He's never been a stupid businessman, so what's his next move going to be? I'd LOVE to see him fight Maragarito. My dream fight for him would have been a showdown with Tszyu 5-6 years ago, but that isn't going to happen now. Maybe a fight with Zab Judah?

Stay tuned to see what he does next. He's 25 and getting old every day for a boxer, so he better make his chess moves carefully and quickly.

I saw the fight. He looked damn good. His weight loss really helps him. I questin his power but it may not be an issue if he keeps his speed up to par.

Well, Shane's power was never as big as it was when he was at lightweight. He wasn't a power puncher at welterweight, otherwise DLH would have been knocked out in their first fight.

I do believe however that if Shane could make the weight at jr welterweight, we'd see some big, power punching fights. He could fight Harris, Hatton and Cotto. If he could make a strong, solid 140 he'd be unstoppable. And it would go a long way to repairing his legacy.

Sugar Shane looked real good vs Collazo. Collazo took some pretty good shots tho, and only went down tha one time he was off balance. Shane just outworked him, maybe because Collazo was at 160 before the fight???

Could be, but the fact is that Collazo is used to fighting orthodox fighters much more than Mosley is used to fighting southpaws. And Mosley still did a great job. I was rooting for Mosley, but I wanted to see Collazo at least knock him down or do better because he's a NY fighter. Collazo is a solid fighter, but he won't ever shine until he starts fighting better opposition and staying at that level. Mosley was definitely a step up, but he should fight a Cintron or Margarito next. Keep his skills sharp. Get better and more aggressive sparring partners.

Also, his conditioning is suspect. He faded in the later rounds. I'm not sure if it was from fatigue or from lack of confidence, or maybe a combination of the two, but he faded nonetheless. He needs to stay busy all 12 rounds. He needs to be relentless with his jab as that seemed to be working rather well against Mosley for the first half of the fight.

I'd like to see Collazo in more matches, but if he doesn't stay busy I have a feeling he'll be an opponent instead of a contender.

Mosley on the other hand is in a position to do a couple of things. He can fight Margarito, a man he stated that Mayweather should fight before getting a shot at him. He can fight Zab Judah, who I'm sure is dying for a chance to put his career back on track. He could move down 7lbs and face Hatton or Cotto.

What road will he take? I don't know, but I hope it gives us a good show.

Against Mosely Collazo needed a better strategy to deal with Shanes superior hand speed. Perhaps he could have worked the angles better or used more footwork.

It was all of those things. Its hard to fight southpaws for most people. Collazo will could probably make most 147 pounders look bad just by staying busy and aggressive.
