  • Ricky Hatton Vs Jose Luis Castillio

    I'm picking Castillio here.

Normally, I would have picked Hatton because I hold him in high regard. He's like a British Bulldog: Sticky, tenacious and a workhorse. His body attacks are brutal, he's got a solid chin and he's not afraid to get inside and bang.

However, after seeing how poorly he performed against Collazo, I have serious doubts about Hatton. If he comes in like he did against Tszyu, then anything can happen because he'll be a force to be reckoned with. If he comes in the way he did against Collazo he's going to lose. Castillio is no Collazo. He's a skilled veteran that IMO is underrated.

Castillio is an excellent boxer that doesn't have to brawl in order to get a win. I think he'll use his size and reach to keep Hatton at bay, while scoring and moving. He's a warrior as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if he brought some pain to Hatton in response to win Hatton scores.

The real question is how will Castillio perform at this new weight, and has Hatton re-adjusted to jr welterweight so that he doesn't perform like he did against Collazo. Both are great fighters, and this fight will determine which will go on to be the elite jr welterweight in the world of professional boxing.

The fight I really wanted to see was Hatton vs Cotto, for which I was rooting for Hatton big time. I wanted to see Hatton punish Cotto for 12 full rounds and maybe knock him out with a minute left. Sadly it was not meant to be.

Well, Hatton says he's putting his all into preparations for this one. I think he really wants to look great in this fight after he looked like he lost against Collazo. Actually, I know he does.

I think this will be a great one. I can't really defend my pick with confidence here as I've never really seen Castillio perform at this weight. I'm a fan of both fighters, but I'd like to see Castillio pull this one out simply because Hatton got the gift against Collazo.

Hatton is a real bruiser, and I don't ever recall seeing Castillio deal with a style like his. Styles make fights, so this will be interesting to watch how the fighters make adjustments.

I have Hatton winning by UD....i think the pressure he will put on Castillo will make him crack somewhere between the middle to later rounds.

You got it, JKD187. Hatton finished him kind of early in Round 4.

        However, a couple of things.

        1) Castillio came in looking like he wasn't all there. I'm not the only one who noticed it as it was obvious by watching the first round.

        2) That knockdown could have been legitimate, I just don't think the punch was a KO punch. It looked very suspect. Castillio was on one knee listening to Cortez count. He could have made it to his feet but he chose to stay down. He wasn't writhing in pain like DelaHoya was when Hopkins caught him. And if you notice during the post-fight interview Castillio is able to walk over, congratulate Hatton and then exit the ring all on his own unassisted. That didn't sit well with me.

It was a fight that ended quickly with spurts of hit-then-clinch action, and Hatton boosts his stock with a win over a P4P technician. I don't want to take anything away from Hatton because I think he's a damned good boxer. A bruiser with a nasty left hook to the body. It just seemed like Castillio didn't look at all like Castillio. He's usually a solid technician that gets the job done, but here he looked like he got sucked in way too easily into Hatton's game. Way too easy.

In the end, the better man won. I'd like to see Hatton take on some more good challenges and look great doing it. I'm really looking forward to hearing Castillio's explanation as to why he didn't attempt to get up though.

Is Jose Louis Castillio an American fighter or a Mexican fighter? Who needs to trash British boxers? I've always written that Hatton was one of my favorites. I suspect that this is behind the fool you made of yourself concerning Calzaghe. Once that excerpt was posted where he made statements that supported what I had been saying all along you became as quiet as a church mouse and posted as often as one too.

Calzaghe acknowledges that recognition in the USA is important, and Kessler's lack of it is the reason he's given as to why he's ducking him. Hatton acknowledges that recognition in the USA is important otherwise he'd be pulling what you thought Calzaghe was pulling: Only caring about the UK and what his legacy meant there.

Hatton can at least say that he's faced great competition so he doesn't have to make excuses for who he might be ducking.

Hats off to Hatton ... a proven champion.
