  • Shane Mosley Vs Antonio Margarito

I think that Margarito takes this one for a couple of reasons.

First, Margarito is younger and hungrier.

Second, Shane has a problem against taller men. When he fought Forrest both times Forrest gave him fits in the ring. Mosley had a bad showing IMO against Cotto. So much so that I believe that the old Shane who beat DLH would have either won, or made it an incredible fight.

Mosley looked old and convinced that he couldn't win. A better fight would have been Mosely Vs Clottey. Clottey gave Margarito a great fight despite being injured early on and had he not been injured I believe that he would have won that fight. People do not look like they want to face Clottey and Margarito doesn't want any parts of Paul Williams.

So now that we have Mosley facing Margarito, I'm picking Margarito. Mosely had the ability to win once upon a time, but if he's fighting like Mosley post-Forrest, the he's going to lose.

I'm suprised the boxing officials are going to let the fight go on. Sugar Shane is under investigation for self admited steroid use.

One time steroid use doesn't ban a boxer for life, Hardball. Shane wouldn't be the first to get caught, and I believe it had to do with the Balco situation. Quite a few athletes are caught up in that mess.

Still, I'm picking Margarito. Hell, you could give Mosley the Balco stuff and I'd still pick Margarito. Shane just doesn't have the fire like he had when he was a killer at lightweight.

One thing about those Latino Brothers; they rarely leave a fight in the hands of the judges--they knock you the fcuk out. LOL

Its not all the Latin brothers. Its the MEXICANS that are known to put their life on the line in the ring. They are crazy. They will slug until one is damn nearly dead. Bleeding all over the place and staggering, they manage to still keep their hands up and return fire. You gotta love it.

The last non-mexican Latino brother who fought like that and achieved greatness was Roberto Duran IMO. I mean, there are other Latinos like Mayorga who fight in a similar fashion, but he ain't great. He's exciting to watch though.

You didn't write who you're picking, Hardball!

Magarito by reputation since I don't know that much about him.

Well they both have great reputations. Margarito is just a younger lion.

But I accept your pick nonetheless.

Youth counts a lot in boxing besides Margarito has the bigger reputation around my Dojo.

Ehhhhhhh ... I don't much care for reputations. DLH had the best reputation in boxing but lost nearly every significant match. Margarito is taller, has a longer reach and is willing to trade where most of Shane's opponents prefer to box.

Shane has dubbed his style "powerboxing", and if he intends to trade with Margarito I see doom for him. Anything can happen as Mosley is affiliated with Golden Boy promotions. Personally I thought Mosley threw the Cotto fight, as Shane wasn't even giving his best effort.

Then I had to rethink that after see him struggle against Mayorga who is at best a brawler with a great chin. I do believe that Mosley's best days are behind him, but he still has a puncher's chance.

He's still got better skill than Margarito, and is definitely faster. Still, I see closing the distance as being a problem for Shane, and with Margarito being the more powerful puncher I don't see Shane "powerboxing" his way through this one.

Well, we both were totally wrong. Sugar Shane turned the tide on Margarito and knocked him the fook out. LOL They caught Margarito in the pre fight preperation with an illegal substance in his glove. They made him take it out of the glove and re wrap his hands.

Shane Mosely totally took the referee and Judges out of the fight with a stunning knockout.

                      Whoooooooooooo Baby!

I can't believe what Shane Mosley did tonight.

What an upset. Every person who had a chance to say so expressed their shock.

All the older boxers from Golden Boy Productions who seemed to be showing their age have mysteriously found some "new" vigor and revived their careers.

Still, I have to say that I haven't seen Shane fight like this against elite opposition since his fight with DLH. He's done well against the likes of Mayorga and Vargas, but against guys like Forrest, Wright and Cotto he just seemed to be timid and impotent.

                      All that changed tonight!

I didn't give him much of a chance. He didn't deserved much faith after all the lackluster performances he's given. Then on top of all the talk of performance enhancers being the reason that Mosley looked so good at welterweight early on really made me wonder. He didn't seem to have that spark after the whole BALCO situation and most people didn't think he ever would against top opposition.

                      Then he came in tonight.

Mosley looked like the Shane from lightweight tonight. He really showed up from the beginning. I've never seen Margarito beaten up like that. I've never seen him look so helpless. I've seen him beaten before but no to a point where he looked like he couldn't try to fight back.

No one can take away from this victory. No one. Its ashamed that it was reported that Margarito's camp got caught loading up his fists with what they called a "hard plastic shell" right before this fight. This raises A LOT of questions. We have to assume that they've been doing that all along which taints Margarito's previous wins. I can't help but wonder how different this match might have gone if Shane's people hadn't caught it beforehand.

This ought to really make things interesting at welterweight.

Margarito is not only a beaten fighter, but also a questionable commodity. This is exactly what happened in the Trinidad/Hopkins fight before Felix Trinidad fell into obscurity. And if Margarito isn't the fighter we thought he was without the hard plastic shell in his fist, then there is going to be a frenzy in the welterweight division.

Since Margarito refuses a $4 million offer to rematch with Paul Williams, the boxing world didn't see anyone else doing what Mosley did tonight.

What a great night for Mosley. Let's see if he'll keep up his winning ways. Perhaps a rematch with Cotto is in order? In the post-fight interview with Maragrito, Merchant asked if he was ready to fight Cotto. I say that fight should go to Mosley. He's earned it and people will want to see that fight now. Maragrito should have to drop back, show and prove.

Yeah we were. If I still had it to do again I'd pick Margarito. It was the smart money, but shit does happen.

How much impact do you think the lack of the hard plastic shell had on the fight, Hardball?

I'd have to say a Major impact. It's like taking off brass knuckles. LOL
Like you said above, I'm now wondering if they have been doing that all along.

but style is everything huh? many times a fighter will lost to guys he's not suppose to because they have the wrong style against this type of opponent. i sure didnt expect that one...
