  • What are the benefits of learning kick-boxing?

    Hi Friends,

    I'm gonna learn kick-boxing soon.
    I've a big-built not obese though.
Also I've a minor back problem.
Is it okay for me to begin these lessons or not?

Actually, i really dont know the advantages or benefits of kick boxing as opposed to regular boxing. Most kick boxers Ive spoken with have lots of injuries and they complain of having many breaks, tears, and ruptures.

Do kickboxers even make the money regular boxers do? Who are the world champions kick boxers right now. Right, no one knows--well I guess someone does. If you have a big build, maybe wrestling would be a better fit.

      Why do you say that?

If you have back problems then kickboxing is a good option. Wrestling is probably not a good idea, or any other style where you may be thrown or put into submissions. As with any martial art when you start out go at you own pace and build up slowly. If you feel under pressure to do anything that just does not feel right, say so, and if it is expected that you carry on, then obviously that is not the style for you. A good instructor will always try to accommodate students needs.

Depending on where you live, there are amateur kickboxing contests around. Aliston's comment seems to be focussed on professional fighting, but I am guessing you are looking for a recreational martial art? Just give it a go!

Why post a question about kickboxing on a boxing forum anyway?

There are good schools and bad for any martial art. Also some clubs focus on fitness, others on competition. So a competition club will probably be a better system to learn. Not sure how it would cause a bad back though, unless there was some very severe and forced stretching.

Yeah I find it hard to believe too. I have been doing MT for about 13 years and my back is fine.

Depends what your goal is. It seems you're in it for fitness, not competition, right? Both are great for fitness, Kickboxing is going to challenge your felxibility as well as your general body awareness more as well... More linbs to think about and train.

kickboxing may help with more flexibility and foot movement and give you a different insite on fighting. Having a wider range of fighting style will help you in both sport.
