“Houston Boxing Community Unites in support of the 75th Annual Golden Gloves”
Houston, TX – February 8, 2011
Constable Victor Trevino from Harris County Precinct 6, Gulf Boxing Association, Inc., Undefeated Combative Sports Magazine and Houston area boxing promoters and professional boxers will come together in celebration of 75 years of Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournaments. Texas’s top amateur boxers will be competing in the 75th annual Houston area Southeast Texas Regional Golden Gloves competition February 9th thru February 13th, 2011.
We are proud to announce that Jesse Valdez will be joining the celebration. Valdez is a former American amateur boxer. In 1964 at sixteen years old Valdez won the National AAU at welterweight. In 1967 while serving in the US Air Force he won the National Golden Gloves championship at light middleweight vs. Eddie Betson. In 1972 he won the National Golden Gloves championship at welterweight vs. Tommy May. Mr. Valdez won a bronze medalist at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
Call for Former Champions
The Golden Gloves is celebrating its 75th Anniversary at this year’s tournament. The Southeast Texas Golden Gloves will be holding a special ceremony to recognize all former Houston area Golden Gloves Champions and needs help from the community to help get the word out to those champions to let them know about this special event. They will receive VIP treatment during the tournament there will be a special ceremony to honor them before the bouts begin on Saturday.
Southeast Texas Golden Gloves is the franchise holder for the Houston area tournament, and will co-host the event with Constable Victor Trevino from Harris County Precinct 6. Proceeds will support the Local Boxing Clubs’ year round amateur boxing program and Constable Victor Trevino’s project, Constable’s Athletic, Recreational and Educational Events (C.A.R.E.) to aid youth and senior citizens.
In previous year’s keynote addresses, Trevino stressed the courage and discipline required from each amateur boxer to step inside the ring and that each young man and woman who enters the competition comes out a better person through positive development of both their bodies and minds. He thanked the coaches and parents for supporting their fighters and emphasized from the point of view of the police department that, “having our area youngsters fighting in the ring, keeps them from fighting in their schools.”
The 2011 event is on track to boast one of the largest turnouts in the history of the event with over 400 boxers pre-registered for the tournament. There will be two boxing rings used and 25-30 bouts in each ring per night. This unique event provides an opportunity for male, female and junior boxers as young as eight years old of all experience levels to compete in one tournament. The fan favorite “All Comers” division allows boxers without any previous match experience to compete against each other, while elite level fighters will proceed through a single elimination bracket to decide who will represent the Houston area at the Texas State Golden Gloves tournament in Ft. Worth on March 2-5, 2011.
Returning champions in this year’s field will include Light Flyweight Daniel Ybarra from Elite Boxing Club in east Houston, Light Welterweight Roscoe Hill IV from J.Prince Boxing Club on the northside of downtown Houston, and from Savannah’s Boxing Club in southwest Houston, Welterweight Regis Prograis, Middleweight Damazo Tello, and Lightweight Zavier Combs. Prograis was selected “Most Outstanding Boxer” at last year’s tournament. 2010 National P.A.L. Bantamweight Champion O’Shanique Foster from the Golden Triangle Boxing Club in Orange, TX, will also be in the field.
The Gulf Amateur Boxing Association is under new leadership this year as Randy Horn begins his first term as president and Juan Moya moves into the role of secretary and treasurer to ease the transition. Randy was previously the Association’s Chief of Officials and is a level 3 (national) referee who was selected as the “Most Outstanding Official” at the 2010 National P.A.L. Championships. He also serves on the National Rules & Regulations committee as a board member and secretary. Last year he founded and was the Tournament Director for the Houston Open Ring Nationals boxing tournament.
