  • Need advice on not getting beat down.

I would like to get a heavy bag and some gloves but I know nothing or little about them. I am 6ft, 175lbs and was wondering how heavy a bag to get and what it should be made of. I was thinking between 75lbs and 100lbs, and as far as brand I am looking at TKO. Should I just get inexpensive bag gloves or more expensive boxing gloves? Any advice on beginning boxing training and beginning purchases would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

take the cash you'd spend on that and go join a boxing club. Learn the techniques properly and then practice at home.

Either weight will work, but I suggest you go with a 100 lb. bag so it doesn't swing so easily when you strike it. As far as gloves, go with 12 or 16 oz. gloves. They don't have to be expensive, but the idea is to have plenty of padding to reduce the risk of hurting your hand. Many types of "bag gloves" won't provide that. In the same vein, you should also buy some handwraps and put those on as well for added protection.

If you have any interest in learning muay Thai or kickboxing, consider buying a muay Thai "banana bag" as that will help you develop your kicks to the leg.

Finallly, I suggest you take some lessons on how to strike the bag properly so you don't hurt yourself. A few years ago, Shaq missed a number of games with the Lakers because he injured a hand while working the heavy bag. Good Luck!

If there is a Boxing gym by you....go there......shouldn't cost that much..i've never paid more than 50 bucks a year and i've trained at 3 different ones...... they can teach you basics if you don't know them already... you said in your subject to learn not to get beat down.......... the bag is great but thats not going to teach you to not get beat down....... only a coach and getting in there with someone will help you.......if you go to a gym....don't be intimidated......if you begin to spar, do it with someone with a lot of experience and let them know you're not ready for them to go hard on you.......my first time sparring the guy had been boxing for 10 years........he allowed me work hard and basically he was just slipping and ducking my punches getting me use to timing and being able to hit a moving target.........you don't get that in a bag...... you should go with the gym if you have that access it would be worth the time if you put in the effort
        good luck
