hey bansheeman95. if you want to develop real power, you probably don't want to get anything under 90 lbs. the heavier the bag, the more you will improve. but to account for you wife, maybe something close to 90 or a little over would be ok. anybody can feel free jump in and correct me if i'm wrong. hope i helped.

The best type of bag to get is the Thai style "banana" bag. These are generally long (6') and 100 lbs. or more when filled. The benefit of these is that you can practice a full array of punches, kicks, knees and elbows at all levels - high, low and medium - to better simulate real opponents. These bags are more slender than Western boxing style bags.
There are a number of women who train Muay Thai at the center where I train, and they have no problem using these bags. Some of those women are smaller than your wife.
Good luck!

I have four different types of bags in the basement. A speed bag, a reaction bag (ball connected to floor and ceiling), a wavemaster (water filled base, I'm guessing it's equal to about 70 pound bag) and hanging heavy bag (over 120 pounds). I train three 3-minute rounds on each with a one minute rest between rounds, with three minute warmup and cooldown = almost one hour and a great home workout when I am not in the gym. Why limit yourself to one bag? Also, get some training on how to properly use each piece of equipment, makes a big difference.

Lets put it this way. An individuals heavy-bag should be half their weight. It sounds to me like ur just gonna have to get two bags if you want to get power and for her not to overwork. ur weights are just to far apart to compromise on one bag. sorry!

A 70 lb bag will work fine for both of you. Get an inexpensive vinyl one to start with. Spend what you saved on your bag and purchase good quality leather hook & loop gloves.
It's rather easy to develop bad habits on the bag so try and find a trainer in your area. This will get you started out on the right foot and keep you injury free.
That might be a good thread... "Proper Heavy Bag Work!"
