  • sparring at school, what gloves???

    hello,
just found this forum, its great. i have learnt loads already, there is alot of tips and information on the site.
just thought i would get off on the right foot

    ok, onto my first question.......

its coming up to christmas and i can only think of one thing i mught buy.
me and my mate from school are really into training and geoff thompson stuff, we want to start sparring and reality training at lunch times but we dont want to knock each other out.

which gloves are best to get? will it be like 14 or 16oz and are the different types of glove for practise and for in the ring?

i think we will be doing mainly head shots
    all the best

Bri Thai and I (that rhymes ) already answered this same question. I will summarize what was said so that this thread can die a natural death: Don't train at school, and find a club to train with. If you knew a lot about Geoff Thompson, you would know that he is a big proponent of western boxing, as well as judo. Join a club and beat on each other there--supervised. You'll end up hurting one another or getting tossed from school any other way. If you live in Coventry, why not train with him? As for the gloves, if you are not tiny, get the 16's. Even if you are hitting with gloves, unless you are throwing pansy shots, you will be more than capable of knocking each other out--so don't just trade head blows. Unless you train with an instructor, you will just be brawling and ingraining bad habits. Drop the necessary cash to get some quality instruction.

        cheers Rhian

have read your posts on the other forum, thanks for the help.
i will take your adivce and go safety first, best to join a club, its safer and i will learn more.
i think Geoff Thompson doesnt teach any more, he still trains at Capitol gymn but he is concentrating on writing now.

        thanks once again

Really? That's too bad. He's an excellent instructor with a lot of valuable knowledge and experience. Know anything about Peter Consterdine? He's a friend of Thompson's, a member of the British Combat Association, and he also has a good reputation as a teacher. You might want to look into training with him if you like Geoff's stuff.

            yup

peter Constadine is still about, he did a seminar recently with geoff Thompson.
yeah, its a shame geoff stopped, hes right though, it would be wrong to teach if your heart isnt in it. Reality fighting is dying in Coventry, Justin Gray, Pedro Sauer, Geoff Thompson and a few days ago Neil Adams has said he is closing down his gymn.

                thanks guys

just read this thread again afew months later, ive now started boxing with the guy that taught Geoff.

i see what you mean about getting some lessons, there is NO substitute, i learn loads each lesson that would take days to get right from books etc.

also meeting loads of likeminded guys at training
                thanks once again
