Losing brain cells is the same thing as brain damage.

So what you people basically are saying is that each time a boxer gets hit on the head they get brain damage?

Sounds like a myth, I think you can only lose brain cells is when you get knocked out unconcious otherwise no.

basically who gives a damn if 80 percent get some kind of brain damage or if 100 percent do, if were gonna get scientifical then you have more chance of dying from walking down the street than you do from joining the army, if a guy wants to put himself in a ring and get a few head f***ing shots then let him, i myself aint worried about that stuff if i found myself deteriorating then i would proabably just stop

You lose brain cells every time you bump your head off the wall, so I doubt it really matters if it's from a punch or just you banging your head off of something high up. And whether fighters are naturally brain-damaged to begin with, I won't touch that, just read some of the posts put on here sometime and you'll see empirical evidence at its finest LMAO

It doesn't suprise me; street fighters probably have more damage because they don't use gloves. Is the jury out on UFC fighters? Mediocer and average boxers are probably worst off that good/great fighters. It's best to avoid fights or fight with impunity.

Any kind of hit to the head pretty much damages the brain somewhat; if you bounce a soccer ball on your head, every hit does brain damage, just a significant amount.

I don't think it matters too much in small quantities cuz once you turn 20, your brain cells start dying off anyhow.

But boxers are a wierd type, but you can almost any sport sounds dumb.Soccer is a bunch of guys trying to get a ball into a net with there feet and head while basketball is a bunch of sweaty guys trying to get a ball into a "peach basket" boxers are two guys who face off to do hand-to-hand combat and we enjoy it i get a thrill whenever im in a ring knowing the next punch could break my nose or somthing. We can lose a few braincells i think it only 10% of brain cells that we use in our lifetime so we got 90% of them to waste. So go ahead box your brains out..or your opponents brains

Intended for elementary and secondary school students and teachers who are interested in learning about the nervous system and brain with hands on activities, experiments and information.

"Certainly there are several pathways that serve similar functions. For example, there are several central pathways that are used for vision. This concept is called "redundancy" and is found throughout the nervous system. Multiple pathways for the same function may be a type of "safety mechanism" should one of the pathways fail."

Your brain is built to accept brain damage. It is a survival mechanism.
Perhaps our brains wouldn't be so large if we didnt recieve a certain amount of brain damage throughout our evolution.

Those with the most pathway redundancy show less signs of brain damage, and have higher survival rates.

                      Just stirring up the pot.

                          Brain Damage me not got!

While brain damage is a serious concern to boxers, most significant damage does not come from the loss of brain cells. Post concussion syndrome is a result of the brain bouncing back inside the skull, resulting in a loss of short term memory and an eventual depletion of the fluid that protects the brain inside its sack. See the movie "Hannibal" for a very vivid look at this. Also, over time, brain and neurological function is decreased due to neurons failing to fire across the synapses of the brain, preventing motor function, and in advanced cases, demobilizing speech and resembling parkinsons disease (Muhamid Ali). Even among experts (nueroligists) the brain is still mainly a mystery.
