  • How fast are fast punches?

How fast does one's punch have to be to be considered fast?

    Fast Punches

I think I remember reading on the FMA forum that they are about 30-40 mph. They were comparing the speed of an escrima stick to that of a punch. They said an escrima stick can be going like 80-90.

It was said that B Lee could punch and retract in 3 frames of a movie . I think there are 24 frames in a second . So his speed would be 0.125 sec . Maybe can can do the same . Nowadays you have some (not too expensive)video editing software that lets you cut your homemovie on a level of 1/10th of a second .
So if you record yourself and than edit it , you can approx calculate the speed of your punch .
Does someone has already a standardized method for measuring this ?

I'd say video tape yourself shadow boxing and watch it and ask yourself

Fast enough to hit your opponent without him covering up or counter punching!

James DeMile sells some excellent timers from his website. He learned Wing Chun from Bruce Lee during Lee's Seattle years.

In order for a punch to be considered fast, i'd have to say it has to be fast.

I don't get this thread. If you have cumbersome but powerful punches and superb timing does that make your punches any less effective than someone who may hit faster than you??
This is all relative, subjective bollocks really.

id say as long as you can land it without getting hit back, thats all that matters. you need to land your shots while making sure his dont.

There was this one Wing Chun guy in Australia or somewhere that broke the world record in punching the most in a minute.

                      Here it is:

In August, 2005, one of Grandmaster Fung's students, Robert Ardito, received world acclaim when he broke the Guinness Book of Records speed punching record. His record was 428 punches per minute, breaking the previous record of 347 punches per minute.

I wonder how much strength are in those, or if he even throws them with weight behind them...would be interesting to see...like some wushu guys I've seen, fast punches all day, but they stay stationary and just pump their arms.
