Well if people run away from you then you sort of win by default, right? So there isn't any point in chasing after them. I suppose you could just shoot in on them and take them to the ground if they want to run away. Or you could keep pressing forward until you drive them into a wall. I mean there are walls there right? They can't run forever. Then again your instructor should be telling them to stop being pussies and to get in there and mix it up with you.

This is why I quit the point-fighting tournament thing as a kid. There would be quick guys with no power, who tap you with their wimpy snapping kicks, then run away and get pointed. I only lost one time this way... The other times, I finally caught up the little boogers and knocked the snot out of them.
But to answer your question... Cut off the ring/space with footwork. Know where you are in relationship to the surrounding space. This is taught in boxing.

Cutting off the ring is an important skill to develop...of course you need to be fighting in a ring! Try doubling and tripling up on your jabs, and taking a step forward each time in order to close the distance. If you can fight in a ring, I would suggest using the ring to force your opponent into a corner and then you could pick your shots a little better, basically you have to initiate the "full court press" and be the aggressive fighter. But that ain't all bad because if your fight comes down to the score cards it should weigh in your favor.
