Having read the previous comments on WT footwork being lacking, I was hoping that you could be more specific on what you were experiencing while using it.

well personally when I was to (a)seriously sparring or (b)defending myself, I've naturally switched to a (a)boxing-like footwork or (b)simply forward "stomping" steps. Mainly because out in the street, on uneven grounds, or just wearing non-sporting-shoes, you can't use the WT thrusting step safely (with 100% of the weight on the rear leg, as LeungTing advocates). Also, it's very unnatural to use this WT step if you want to attack first, and on this point I agree with JKD concepts/PFS people.

It was difficult to hold the WT stance when on the street or on a ground that is different to the flat floor you find in gyms. I found it was hard to move forwards/backwards. I think the WT footwork is not good in a real situation, I mean, how can you move like that on the street or in any other ground that isn't the flat gym ground!?!? Austin Goh uses a different stance, keeping 70-60% of the weight on the rear leg. And the steps aren' t done sliding, so you are much more stable when you move. And I really believed that WT didn't need anything more than WT techniques and principles, I was convinced by my instructors and by the Kernspecht books I read...In martial arts magazines, in books and videos I can now see how they try to influence the reader, and within a few weeks one is lead to believe the WT system has no equals. Like they planned! Fortunately I found another Wing Chun school that is much more realistic and that has an open-minded view towards training and techniques. There are boxers who train in WC too and when they spar I can see how the Kernspecht WT stories are fake!

And also, folks, don't forget the (in)famous video of Emin Boztepe vs. W. Cheung: how does the big Turk move? like a f***ing brawler, not like the Leung Ting bible says.... I've also seen some live action with experienced WT fighters: in no way their footwork was the academic one. So why do they insist on that? because the pupil must progress slowly, and pay a lot of money...
We wouldn't be here discussing this topic if the WT "headquarters" were a bit less arrogant in their claims by the way... :-o

I don't really think there is such a thing as a commercial "silat" school. LOL. In regards to the DeThours, there's a possiblity that you did meet with the wrong people.I don't really think there is such a thing as a commercial "silat" school. LOL. In regards to the DeThours, there's a possiblity that you did meet with the wrong people. I'd have to agree with Dan Inosanto when he said the DeThours were the real deal when it came to street fighting....Indonesia's not exactly the suburbs.
anyway a school who offers distance learning silat programs is a commercial school. The peoples I met in Europe were highly gradedinstructors of a famous school in LA. Their silat was a mix of made muda and bukti Negara ... training was like: somebody throws a single! straight punch to your face and you apply prearanged techniques that ended with the death of your opponent. What I found really silly was you had to keep your head forward while advancing towards your opponent...Nobody who wants to harm you is going to throw a single punch.... and put your head forward when fighting against a boxer...
When I showed this in the Philippines my pesilat brothers found it .... funny.
Innosanto isn't really my model as ma instructor.... he said a lot of dubious things.
I prefer to train with peoples who already fought and have a credible reputation in south east Asia. Indonesia and the Philippines aren't the suburbs, got action theremyself but I've been long enough in those places to recognize real deals.

He once wrote something in his book like " most or all the good escrimadors left the Philippines" .... I wouldn't write that and return to the islands if I cared for my health, actually I am quite sure he never went there ... also the stories about Kali and the muslim filipinos, my instructors are muslim filipinos and there isn't any Kali in their area....The thing about the blind princess teaching arnis to Vilabrille...
If you want to learn Arnis better look for a somebody who already fought for real....

It's somewhere in his book on filipino martial arts, I think at the begining. I don't have it with me right now. This statement made many filipinos angry.... the whole Vilabrille story is also stretched....
I will have a look for the book....
