I used to do some informal sprring w/ a friend who trained in CMA, Southern Praying Mantis, if I remember correctly, I din't know then as much as I know now, but he was a good, or at least fast fighter. We never strapped on the gloves and really went at it, but he wasn't a half-bad fighter. There were also a few guys in the dojo when I spent some time training in "Tradtional" Kung Fu" who who spent more time working the bags and practicing techninques in a realistic manner on other people than perfecting their forms. Did't stay at the school long ( started back to college and moved to a different city) but in working with them, they seemd to have the makings of a good fighter.

The law of tyranny:
1. Any power that can be abused will be abused
2. Abuse always expands to fill the limits of resistance to it.
3. If people don't resist the abuses of others, they will have no one to resist the abuses of themselves, and tyranny will prevail.

Like anything else it has more to do with the fighter than the “art”. There are TKD guys that are bad ass KO machines and there’s TKD guys who couldn't fight sleep (I think Geoff Thompson said that), any way this malaise is common to many martial arts not just the CMAs.
