Actually, tigers are pretty ferocious fighters. Where do you think the expression "man-eating tiger" came from? There are dozens of occurences from tribesmen in Africa who were slain by wild tigers and of stories about how one tiger would slay a four man hunter/gatherer party in a relatively short period of time. Tigers are predators, and like any predator, they can definitely throw down.
