there is a saying, dont let the mouth write a check that the ass cant cash.
if you are going to talk about a group of people or even one person in public, dont be surprise if somebody will call you to the carpet about it. and in the martial arts, saying how something is not effective is a waste of time, when your not willing to prove your theory is right. this what the martial arts is all about. i wont say that those guys are right in what they did, that was stupid, but them saying something is to be expected, and then what? either you can walk away, or the guys can say, let's see if you are right.
walk away, then you are guilty of just running your mouth.
but i think a better way is for you and them to exchange information and do it in a better place without liquor and women laying around, so you can focus on your martial arts.
at the same time, LOL at pulling the gun out. when you fight on the street over some stupid shit, you deserve to get the crap scared out of you by a gun. i think it was foolish to take out the gun if you dint intend to use it. what if they had one, and they do intent to use it? somebody would a died over some silly argument that can be settled in a three minutes match.

I'm just discovering this thread myself. It interested me because Bak Siu Lum (my style) is a close cousin of Bak Sing Choy Lay Fut. Just in case all of you MMA guys think traditional kung fu isn't effective in a real fight, most of the moves we train in Bak Siu Lum are killing or crippling blows that most people wouldn't consider using in your average bar room brawl. Throat and eye gouges aren't the first techniques I would pull out of my bag when fighting some guys in a public location.
And I guess it took 5 years to prove the point when it comes to this thread, but if the traditional arts don't work then how do you explain Lyoto Machida? Most of the time he trains with traditional Shotokan Karate. As a matter of fact there are a lot of traditionalists in MMA. Chuck Liddell trained in Kempo which is sort of a cousin of Shaolin kung fu. The guy who beat Kimbo Slice declared his style as being "Karate." It'd be nice to see more kung fu guys in UFC but there are plenty already in Art Of War and other MMA leagues in Asia.
