Jet li's Wu Shu ranking?

I don't really know too much about Wu SHu so i pleadignorance. I was just wonderign what sash, belt or level did Jet Li get to b4 he started making movies?

ARe there such things in Wu Shu? Or are there just specific forms that u have to complete in order to practice the art?

I have similar questions about Jackie Chan but i know that he did Chinese Opera and a mixture of Chinese martial arts.

So help me out all u Wu SHu guys out there, i need answers!!!!!

I am in no way a Wushu .. guy... at all... and dont claim to know anything much about it , however while waiting for a movie to come on, (you know how they have those "guess who it is" things)... it said "Was the Wushu Champion of China when he was 11" and it was Jet Li.... I'm not sure if thats for his age group, for under 18, or for all of china.. but thats all I know. hope that helps.

Not sure if there are belts in Modern Gymnastic Wu Shu, But i think it is more like a gymnastic diploma system.This is a martial art based sport. It is not really a representation of traditional or authentic Chinese martial arts.

In traditional Chinese arts there are no 'grades' this was created by Jigaro Kano of Judo and is a Japanese system.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the Beijing Wushu Team (Jet Li was one of the first members) uses belt ranking. A lot of Chinese Martial Arts schools don't and go by years of training as opposed to belts attained.

Again, I'm not 100% (I don't have my Jet Li bible next to me right now LoL) but I think he started training when he was 8 years old... or 6? I remember him talking about the methods of training in some interview. He mentioned that they had to work external styles for a few years before they could do internal styles (which makes sense especially if he started young). He was in Shaolin Temple when he was 19, which I'm not sure but I think that was his first movie.

From what I've heard elsewhere, the Chinese Opera uses a lot of kung fu and so the members train just as hard as the Beijing Wushu Team.

Not a wushu guy (I do TCMA) but I can help with your questions.

Kung Fu does not traditionally have any belt ranking system. Jackie Chan holds no titles or records that I can think of. Jet Li is different though. He won the children's national Wushu championship once and the national Wushu championship four times before he retired from competition to pursue a career in entertainment. His record of five total national championships has not been rivalled to this day.

CMA is traditionally divided into external styles (Long Fist, Lohan Quan, etc.)
and internal styles (Taiji, Bagua, etc.). Some types of Kung Fu (like Hung Gar) have both internal and external material. Traditionally internal forms are based around the concept of Qi flow whereas external forms concentrated more on body development. Of course a pseudo-magical force does not really power internal martial arts and the truly effective ones do so through redirection of force and grappling which they are quite good at when trained correctly.

When Jet went to Shaolin it was to film movies. He has never been ordained though he wanted to for a while.

Internal styles are styles that focus on the internal strengths, or chi development and manipulation along with strengthening the internal organs. Tai Chi styles, Qigong, Ba Gua, Xhing Yi are all specifically internal. There are also a lot of internal aspects of different external styles.

External styles are styles that, though combining with internal are more powerful and healthy to study, don't need the internal aspect to use effectively. You can learn Northern Fist and use it effectively without adding your chi or connecting your internal energy. In short: External styles focus more on the external aspects of your body and soul. Internal styles focus more on the internal aspects of your body and soul.

They are both waaay more powerful when combined.

THERE ARE NOOOOOO BELTS OR SASHES IN WUSHU. JACKIE CHAN WENT TO CHINESE THEATER SCHOOL. MY SIFU TRAINED WITH JET LI. AND WAS NATIONAL CHAMPION IN CHINA A COUPLE TIMES. ONE OF MY SIFU'S FORMER STUDENTS IS KNOW IN CIRC DE SOIL(SPELLING) SHE WHERES THE WHITE TIGHTS AND HER HUSBAND WERES WIGHT TIGHTS 2. THEY BOTH WERE MARDI GRAS TYPE MASTKES WITH BIG FEATHERS. i LANDED A FRONT HAND SPRING 2 DAY YAAAY!!!

Please wushu_flip do us all a favour and learn some grammar. Shouted EMails with absent spelling are difficult at best. That aside, yes Jackie Chan comes from a Chinese Opera background, the same one as Sammo Hung if memory serves. And yes, both traditional CMA and modern performance Wushu have no belt rankings. Veggimomi and I already covered those points.

As I said before I am not a wushu guy, I do TCMA. As a result I don't know if the WKF has a sash based ranking system.
