  • Lai Hung - EVER heard of him???

Lai Hung was a kung-fu ring fighter and he fought in muay thai fights and fought in Cambodian ring matches using Choy Lay Fut and Northern Shaolin.

You can google- Lai Hung Chinese Martial Arts Institute

    He teaches in California

I havent heard of him but there are probably many other kung-fu practitioners who enter tournaments and win- to all those who think that kung fu doesnt work in the ring. Kung-fu had won in no-holds barred fights and K-1 fights as well as many others. Just because you see a bunch of idiots putting up clips of beginners in kung-fu getting their asses beat, doesnt mean that kung-fu sucks.

The only kung-fu guy that I know of who won an MMA match was a guy who fought in an elimination match in one of the early UFC's. His style was choy lay fut and san shou; most of his fighting though was san shou.

Are there any top ranked kung fu fighters in K-1? There's a couple of high ranked TKD black belts who are B-level fighters in K-1, but I haven't seen any kung fu fighters.

Please show us, it would be good to see.

Well my kung-fu teacher Joe Sayah used to fight in K-1 for a short period of time had only 3 fights though but won 2 of them. Also fought in no-holds barred and won there too. Its seriously not the same using something like wing chun with gloves on and withought gloves. We train with gloves sometimes at our kung-fu place, and my Sifu teaches us to have more of a boxer's guard so you can see better with the big gloves not blocking your view, also he teaches us to make the movements a little wider so that the hands dont get stuck. Many wing chun moves require a lot of wrist rotations and that is really hard to do with gloves on, and of course you cant really apply your contact reflexes as well because its hard to feel throught the gloves. Also the wing chun vertical punch doesnt really work with gloves on, because you cant do enough damage with it if you are wearing gloves. Thats why we use more boxer style punches but use the same wing chun basic blocks as pak sao or lop sao with a punch like lop sao L-hook or pak sao L-hook foot work is the same. No bobing and weaving because you can time the bounce and catch your oponent of balance when he is comming up.

Yes, I've heard of Lai Hung. On a website somewhere that is connected with the Vince Lacey's website, it goes into some detail concerning Lai Hung. The site includes pictures, along with brief commentary on Sifu Hung's martial arts fights. While it expounds on his victories, it is quite polite and indirect when addressing where he may have lost (against Muay Thai fighters). He is alleged to have earned the nickname "Daredevil Hung", or "Crazy Hung".

Lai Hung bears a remarkable resemblance to former American Idol contestant William Hung. I would not be surprised if they were related. Lai Hung and Willian Hung even look to have the exact same appearance in TEETH -- what a HUGE OVERBITE! If they are related, then it must be a trait that runs strong in the family. If not, then it is possible that Mr. Lai Hung's less than perfect dental health would infer that he may have gotten his ass owned by Muay Thai fighters during his prime. TIGER UPPPERCUT!!

Lai Hung's my teacher. To clarify the record, he's not related to William Hung (I can't tell if that was a joke or not). About his record, he won all his tournaments except for the ones against the Thai fighters. In Cambodia, he had defeated the #2 Thai fighter. However, when he went against the #1 of that time, Bing Leung (think that's how his name was spelled), he was defeated.

Lai Hung went down to do a single-leg takedown, and the thai fighter kneed him the jaw, knocking him out. And yes, I think he did shatter some teeth.
