  • Is $150 a month too much?

Hey everyone, this is my first post here.

Here's my problem. I'm 15 years old and would like to join a wing chun class. The school's website can be found here or here (they are the same school). The beginner's class is every Saturday 2-4 pm. I recently found out the price ($150), and . I'm used to seeing $100 a month classes where you can go at least 3 days, and I hope this is not one of those McDojo deals.

Would you guys say this school is any good judging from those websites and if $150 is a reasonable price?

For 150 a month you should get 4 days of week classes and unlimited use of the dojo. Also, you should get some serious cross training in other styles for that price.

65-70 a month is about normal.

      dood:
I asked my friend about this who knows wing chun and he said Tom Wong has always charged alot. YKS is a unique style but at that rate for one day a week it will take you forever. He recommended this teacher who is from the late Wong Shum Leung lineage who he said teaches you at an excellent pace and really cares about the students. Dont know if this school is close to you or not but the rates are more in line, and you can even join for a year for a reasonable rate.

Hope this helps you out with at least one option to look into. Also watch the classes and talk to the teacher.

I've been talking to Tom Wong and he was willing to lower the price to $125. I will look into both schools, thanks a lot.

if its only 1 class a week its a rip. The place i train at its 150/month but its like 4-5 hours a day training and you can come in before class and train and stay after so some days its like 7-8 hours of training for 150 a month open 6 days a week

My son Karate class averages something like $5 a class. $150 a month for basically four classes is a rip....

Well it also depends on who is teaching and how well he is teaching. There might be a very bad instructor who charges barrely anything but if a good instructor charges 150/month then id pick the good instructor.

Sounds way overpriced...you're a kid and you're eager...I have a feeling that if you come up with the cash you're gonna go for it anyways regardless of our posts.Hopefully, you get what you pay for. That price isn't cheap...MR. Wong oughta give you your moneys worth (hopefully)...you be the judge of that...if you decide to go for it make that money worth it (in and out of class)...always train hard.

                  Hardball is Right

I'm with Hardball on that One. Most gyms around the country charge about 60 - 90 bucks a month, and you improve your overall fitness. It sounds like to me like this teacher is really money hungry, and it'll take you too long to really get a good grasp on your wc technique. I think if a teacher trains his students about 3x per week and charges about $80 - $100, that'll be good for you.

Find something cheaper. That's what I would do. There are world champions who charge less.

Hmm sounds like McDojo. You should get personal lessons with that price.

                        Watch the classes

see if you can watch his classes, are his students any good? A good teacher should be happy to allow you to observe several classes beginner and advanced and allow you to talk the the students. 125-150 a month for a 15 year old is very expensive. If this is for one class a week run dont walk away...it will take years and tens of thousands of dollars to become proficiant at that rate.
