Shaolin Animal Kung-Fu
.....
Snake
The Shaolin Snake is the bureaucrat, the keeper of knowledge and wisdom. It is the style that likes things ordered and predictable. It is a very unimaginative style that focuses on simplicity, speed, accuracy, knowledge and timing.
Snake stylists uses very simple, straight and Snake (s bend) techniques both for the hands and legs. Generally aiming with a toe or one finger at a specific target that the Snake practitioner has identified for their current opponent. This will then be executed with minimum energy usage. For the Snake Style is that of a single, accurate, very high efficiency strike or kick.
The Snake style practitioner is never the attacker (much like the Shaolin Crane). It waits patiently for the right moment, the right spot, the right 'opportunity' for it's single, precise attack. It does not use any style of blocking but relies on it's agile body and quick reflexes being enough to avoid any contact what so ever. The Snake allows only one contact and that is it's attack.
To practice Snake Style the practitioner must spend a lot of time working on accuracy and precision. He/she must be 100% in timing, distancing, effort, target and opportunity. They may use some distracting, swaying motions, occasional feints (each executed as if it were a real attack, which it could be) but that is as complex as it gets.

I used to have a snake, she was almost 9 feet long. She lives in a private exhibit now but I used to watch her feed. Stalk her prey, corner it, strike and constrict. I've seen her miss altogether and bash her head on the glass with some serious force. I've seen her catch and constrict her prey from the branches of the tree (fixture) in her cage and I've seen her drown her prey in the water dish (tub). Seems to me she was quite a grappler and even killed live food by pressing it against the floor or wall as well as her own body if it was too small to wrap herself around it.
Kung fu is great but they tend to miss or lose things along the way...How does a snake defend itself? it slithers away in a hurry...
[" And although we may do our best to avoid trouble, sometimes trouble insists on finding us. When that happens......when the time for talk is over, warriors act. They flip the switch and act decisively - ruthlessly if necessary - to preserve and defend the things that they hold dear." Michael D. Janiich Why being a warrior starts with accepting the limitations of peace.
From the crane we learn grace and self controll
the snake teaches us suppleness and rythmic endurance
From the tiger we learn tenacity and power
and from the dragon we learn to ride the wind
all creatures low and high are one with nature
if we have the wisdom to learn all may teach us their virtues.

i have studied alot of shaolin. some animal forms are very effective, i find snake style is so effective in real life situations, it focuses on the faces weak spots, ie eyes temple throat other spots too, but if you conditionyour snake fist, then train in extreme speed methods that suite snake style, you can have a very lethal supprise attack that most of the time ends the fight if landed and performed correctly,
simple snake hand to the eye, when in a supprise action can be so effective, disable the vision, then you win. but dosent always work as any martial artist knows, a fight is unpredictable always.

I agree with gong fu. Not only are snake style hand strikes lethal if properly executed. In Shaolin 10 animal snake form of sifu kwan tak hing I was surprized to learn that third and fourth movement is a quite effective elbow joint lock and a lethal kick to the throat of your bent over apponent. called poisonous snake tail strike. And pythons twisting turn looks very similar to an akido move with its wrist lockto hip throw. The movement is finished by breaking the opponents neck with with the bottom of your right foot. Both requiring much practice to execute but if mastered quite effective.
Now my point......takin in context with the form, these moves are are 100% snake, but taken out of context of the form most would have a hard time identifying them as snake.
There was another thread that questioned the practical aplication of forms and there value as a viable means for defense, I wish had posted this one there.
