As you will soon find out, this is a diverse site wih many styes and opinions.I took shaolin kungfu because it was traditional and augmented it with kempo because i love the explosive violence in it.

Kempo, most harm in the least time, but you gotta be fast.

Brissie has excellent Praying mantis there, the grand master henery sue i think was his name has been on a SBS documentary for his kung fu. Ask around, better than reading and sorting out hours of useless information.

before rushing into gung fu start small, try a few drill excersizes and home training to prepare yourself before dedicating to a style. i suggest you harden your body and make it more supple before actual combat training methods. start by doing basic drills look it up and maybe go along to some classes around your area picking up some tips on the basics then practise in your own time. start going jogging every morning at around 5 am before you get up to start your day and before breakfast, walk with your arms out beside you holding them up, then kick each leg in turn upwards to your head straight out infront of you while you walk forward then backwards in a straight line, do this for aslong as you can each time increase the lenth of time you do it for. stand in horse stance crouching down for long periods of time, again increasing the lenth of time you do it for every time you do it. (obviously if you master these basics and can do them for seriously long periods of time, dont go and stand in horse stance for too long like a whole day lol serious leg cramp) there are many basic drills for you to learn look into it a little further and ask advise from people for basic routines and methods to perform before you start actual combat fighting, the basics are the root and foundation for your whole fighting style/styles they are so important. ask Boarspear for a couple of tips for before combat training/conditioning. ile help you out a little more once you reaserch gung fu a bit more and grasp some basic concepts.

I don't know about all that training at home stuff. What's your fitness level anyway? If you're already physically adept, I would recommend just going to a few schools to see what you like, and to learn some basics. A lot of schools will let you have a free class or 2, sometimes even a whole month. It's really hard to learn any martial arts from a book or tv. You need someone to practice with a lot of the time, and someone to tell you if you're doing it wrong. When I first started, I didn't realize there was so much to just simple things. You can really hurt yourself if you don't do things correctly. >_>
