From what I know Shaolin Chuan = Shaolin Boxing = Chinese Boxing, its just western translation or way of saying it, not derrogitory as it may seem. (Boxing to westerners was/is fighting with no weapons, when westerners saw these men duking it out they called them boxers, hence the "boxer" rebellion in the colonial era ect....) As far as I know, this "branch" of Chinese Gung Fu is just the name of the styles eminating from the famous Shaolin Temple in the Henan province. I think that this temple and the term "Chinese Boxing" include many martial arts, I beleive Henan is considered to be northern, even though its pretty much in the middle of China's latitude. So, I am guessing that such styles have a lot to do with longer strikes and kicks, as do many northern styles.
