If you can't throw it fast?

Its all equal.
The attacker is attacking you- he's coming toward's you and your not playing chasey. When he attack's you- attack him with much force, and knock him out!

Thats good for theory. But in practise, it doesn't always work like that. We wouldn't need Martial arts if knocking an attacker out was so easy.

What are some effective ways to develop power?
Wing Chun uses proper body alignment and angles to generate power.
You develop these qualities by training with the wooden dummy.
Furthermore the pole trains the stance and helps you to increase your hands speed.

Best way of power generation: Train your martial arts on both the Wing Chun, karate and boxing way.
In an fight you will use the technique's that come first in your mind- that you rehearsed most-.

So train all your different technique's, in the open air, in different angles, in punching barefisted on the heavy bag.(Both with all strenght that you got and with the fastest thing that you can do.)

The best way of understanding things is to look at it's roots(traditional forms of Wing Chun and Karate) and then build it up to streetwise speed/strength/angle's.

Start working both with an partner and on the heavy bag/in the open air different combo's with the technique's that you know.

like let's take this: Wing chun forward punch, Jab, reverse punch, hook, uppercut, spear hand.

          start working out with Jab+Jab.
when you masteredthat work with Jab+Jab+reverse punch
          Jab+Jab+hook
Jab+jab+reverse punch+hook+spear hand to the throat
etc etc etc. you get the idea.

It's the best tip that I've ever got.(from Marco Lala's dvd about Karate-boxing connection)

punching barefisted on the heavy bag
While diversity in training is ok always consider your health. Punch mitts + wrap the hands to secure the wrists

Ofcourse, but when you do not feel the pressure on your knuckles and on your wrists that hard anymore you can move on to an thinner protection, and after that to barefisted for most power development.

Remember, even while most see it as pure sports now, every Martial arts was used either in real combat, without gloves and without anymore protection than you wear in your everyday life.

If an martial artist loses an fight in an streetfight it's not since he can't fight, but since his body isn't trained for hard impact like boxers and kickboxers train for.

an martial artist of karate/wing chun kind of fighting arts is by far the most powerfull on the streets if they train their technique's on training partners+on hard impact.(they didn't wore gloves either on in karate makawari or in wing chun the wooden dummy. try to punch like you would do on an attacker on the wooden dummy and you will hurt yourself pretty much if you're not used to it.)

especially if you take the karate technique's or what is known more as the "one inch punch" from wing chun wich Bruce Lee made pretty famous they will become very powerfull.
but other technique's and punches/kicks will ofcourse get more powerfull if used on some hard resistance.
