He uses wushu as sort of a base, but also I've noticed forms of kung fu in some of his movies. I wouldnt quote me on this, I just started to take notice to similarities to the styles he uses. Some times he uses specific genres of a martial discipline for certain movies (ie: the drunken master movie and the shanghai noon/nights movies; these are just a few examples off my top of the head). I also enjoy watching his fighting and movies. They are funny, and fun to watch

correct
Yes you all are correct.
He did learn originally from the chinese opera. Then he learned Hollywood Kungfu, which includes 5 animals Hung Gar. Remember he even states "I am an actor, not an martial artist". I love Jackies movies too, but Jet Li is a better fighter, he trained at Shaolin.

Hi Fastnfuriois.
Its wushu... But he didnt train for wushu competitions like Jet li.
Like all in chinese wushu kids, he did when he was young, but then he went to a peking opera school. Those guys who sing so strange jump from cupboerds etc. They concentrate more on doing back-handsprings on the spot and flips then wushu jumps. Thats also why he is the a better actor then other chinese martial artists.
About him mixing Kung fu in....
Kungfu is just a very speaded interpretation of TRADITIONAL WUSHU and actually just means SKILL. 50 years ago chinese artists spreaded wushu as chinese SKILL, thats why foreigners think that wushu is KUNGFU.
Just because of national proud.... WUSHU is KUNGFU.
That would be like if amercans spreaded basball as amercial SKILL and the chinese just repeated the word SKILL...lol
But its ok to say kungfu, because everybody knows what it is.
However... Peking opera artist like to work more with tradtional stuff, becasue peking opera is something very traditional.
But they have to be very good at modern wushu and acrobatics.
If you want to look up more about Chackie Cahn in the web. His Chinese Name is CHENG LONG.
If you want to know more about wushu.
You can visit my website
I also have all kinds of instructions there. But unfortionately in particular for modern wushu and acrobatics,

TAOLU is everything we know thats chinese kungfu ar forms.
There are many styles and forms, the most develoved and
spreaded ones are competed and called modern wushu.
zhang quan is the most modern on and has the highest rank in
china. When a style becomes more modern, its apllications lose
importance and acrobatics win importance. Thats why traditional
wushu (more spreaded as KUNGFU) has more applications and is
less acrobatics.
U cannot fight anybody with modern zhangquan, its just mad to
look good. But you can with wingchun
SADA is another section of wushu... This is the same as Thaiboxing
just without elbows. Looks the same, only that u keep the
hands lower.
Chackien chan knows some sanda,
so he can fight
but acrobatics are better for movies.
SHUAIJIAO is just like Judo. But u dont need to hold your opponent on
the floor. At the beginning there was only one china and one
chinese martial art with thoses sections and styles.
Later The Japanese seperated from china etc....
So many new but similar martial arts styles developed

Jetli used to be the best at modern wushu.
Everybody who did wushu for 20 years, did sanda for some time, but many dont like it... Its just different.
modern wushu is like gymnastics and dancing... They are just no fighters....
But there is no way, somebody who went to a chinese wushu school so long, didnt ever do sanda or shuaijiao.... NO WAY.............
Howver... That doesnt make him a fighter

He may have done sanda. But he obviously doesn't like it. In one of his articles, he believes that this is what martial arts has evolved to. A demonstration of weapons of the past. He doesn't claim any ability what so ever in actualy fighting. But i must say, his moves are pure beauty.

Jet Li says in an interview regarding the UFC guys he fights in the "Cradle 2 the Grave," quoting him, "....they could probably all beat me up."

I disagree, Jackie began in chinese opera when he was young therefore he knows all the flips and flexible stunts. As a young boy he use to fight alot so he learnt traditional chinese gung fu, this included alot of different schools as he advanced more in movies. Styles include hung gar (very popular in movies back then), prob some CLF, WC and other various family styles. Jackie also knows some kick boxing, japanese, korean arts which maybe displayed in some movies. Wushu did not appear in hong kong until late as it would not have survived in the days when there were territory wars between the traditional chinese gung fu schools.

In Jackie Chan's Biography, "I am Jackie Chan - My life in Action" which I read last year, and still have. He mentions, that from the age of around 5 years his Dad used to wake him up in the morning, and go through a routine of exercises, to strenghen him up. Also, he went though basics of a Northern Style of Martial Art, I can't remember which, and I'm too lazy to look it up.
From the age of 10 years, he went to the Peking Opera School. Where the average day was somthing along the lines of waking up a 5 am, warm up, exercsie, more exercise all the way to lunch time, where they could eat and go to the toilet. After lunch, they did some more exercise, and more exercise, had some schooling where they apparently just mucked about and didn't learn anything. Then there was more exercise, some tea (as in dinner time), then they exercised and practised up in till 12 midnight. If it wasn't so late at night for me here, I would bother to find a more accurate day plan. Also, when I say exercise, I mean they exercised fitness, martial arts, opera singing, performance, weapons, make up, acrobatics etc.. etc...
From what I can remember when he described the martial arts, they learnt a Northern Shaolin system. And, I'm pretty sure he also talked about heavy sparring, and proper applications.
The head of the Peking Opera School, actually adopted jackie as his own son, which meant that Jackie was the example, and ended up being worked twice as hard.
There is more in the book, but its require me skimming over it, and I can't be bothered with it, right now.
From his films, I've heard Jackie learnt some TKD, for high flashy kicks, he also Leant some Hapkido from the Hapkido Grandmaster, who was an actor in one of Jackie's films; as the 'ard as nails' bad guy in "Young Master".
I'm tired, so I've probably made a few mistakes.
