Hey gang I came across something I would like some input about. recently I had the opportunity to view a dvd selection by a masked man known as "Lt X" Not knowing what to expect I watched them with an open mind, and I am still not sure what to make of it. for those of you who are not familiar with this gentleman i'll give you a quick rundown: basically the purpose of his teaching method is to accelerate the learning of ANY FIGHTING SYSTEM or ANY other endevor you choose to apply it to. The actual method was coined 'ABC'= ACCELERATED BATTLEFIELD COMBATIVES. or as the press refers to it 'murder by numbers' it reminded me of the 12 angles of attack in knife fighting, except his stops at 9 angles. His contention is that if you learn to look at a opponent as a given set of numbers you can remove the safety that is built into all humans against violence and do what needs to be done, with extreme prejudice. Although I have not tried any of his theories his lecture concerning tapping into and bypassing certain areas of the brain rang familiar from past martial endevors.

Can the learning process really be sped up?

Kudos to you for viewing a DVD featuring a masked man by the name of "Lt. X" with an open mind!
Can the learning process be sped up? Yes. This is a matter of training methods - learning by rote, or learning with a progressive series of drills designed to provide the practitioner with the understanding of the "why" and the "when" of a giving set of movements, not only the "how." Training with uncooperative opponents (again, progressively), training with "aliveness", all these can speed up the learning process.
Training your responses to any given attack/position to the point that they are reflexive - can this be sped up? I don't think so. It's a question of practice practice practice.

The learning process can be sped up in the sense that you put more time and effort into the art more than everyone else and think about it 24/7. Other than that and practicing and drilling on your own, there's nothing really you can do...

Thanks for the response, however I think my choice of wording was unfortunate, It wasn't the 'speeding up' aspect of the presentation that caught my attention, it was the idea of making your/my art 'usable.' Of course sparring comes to mind, and I do not mean to imply that our arts need 'fixing' but I am sure that like me you have seen or heard about some 'umptenth' degree black belt having their tails handed to them when the crap hit the fan. Consider how law enforcement agencies and various militaries have to look for ways to train their agents in a manner that is not only efficent "quick" but will also allow the agent to defend themselves in the most savage manner if need be. I appreciate and study the tma but i guess i can't get that old adage about 'sooner or later it comes down to results' out of my mind.
P.S. just look at how many threads on this very site ask about "what is the best art?", or "what is the most effective ma?"
P.P.S. As long as people are asking these questions there will always be the LT X's in the world.
thats all for now.

The fastest way to learn is total immersion. If the NSA wants you to be a russian "translator" they will throw you into russian culture. Everything will be russian for at least 6 months, until you can speak a specific dialect from a specific area of russia and you will walk like a russian. If you want to learn spanish, move to spain and live among the people for 6 months with no contact from the rest of the world. Soon you will be spanish. If it is a life or death situation and you need to be great at fighting, you must train and fight every moment from morning to night for at least 6 months, and do nothing else. No time for reading, talking on the phone, or watching TV. If you fight everyday, you become a fighter. It doesnt matter what martial art a real fighter uses; He's going to kick 99% of peoples butts anyways.
