  • Myth Buster

Just to settle some martial arts myths here which would be quite interesting.

My Myths that I have heard:

    1. Strike someone in the adams apple will kill someone-
I have seen boxers being hit here, even street fights and no one has died from it.In common sense, a strike hard enough will kill anyone in any vital spots.

2.palm strike up the nose will drive the cartilidge into the brain and kill the person-
Again with all those UFCs and fights that involve broken noses, I have never seen anyone die from a strike to the nose. Logically cartilidge is pretty fragile and would more than likely break than to be pushed up the nose.

Having your windpipe crushed can kill you, but it isnt that easy to do, there are little "disc" that hold it open, these can be crushed or cause rips and tears in the linings.

All the driving the cartlidge into the brain nonsense is just that.

I agree. especially with number 2. the cartelige is just too weak to do much damage to yor skull. but no one beleives you when you say this.

also consider this. the nose being in the centre of your face it take a high percentage of any punches to your face. more people would die each year as a result if it was true. they don't.

I think the original nose myth was that the small bone at the base of the nose needs to be broken and driven up into the brain. This bone represents such a small target though, that it would be impossible to hit with enough force to do this. Not to mention the fact that it wouldn't actually work

I don't believe anyone has ever said that a hit to the nose will cause cartilage to drive up to your brain. What people are saying is that if you palm strike the opening of the nose with force parallel to the slant angle of the nose and push upward, you can drive the base of your nose upward and cut into your brain.

There's a variation on it that actually works, when you hold just the tip of one key between your thumb and index finger.

Raking and slashing with keys works well enough...

True, and if you hold it properly it can't be used against you. Plus, I like having my primary key between my index finger and thumb when walking towards my car anyway, so I won't be one of those people fumbling in my bag for a half hour.

                  Oh, and key eye strikes.

It's a sad day when Americans are seriously discussing using keys for SD

Of course your key isn't your best primary weapon, but what if you can't sneak a knife into the building you were just in past the metal detectors and security guards? Keys, rocks, snapple bottles, hairspray and lighters, lol.
