Why dont some shaolin monks do some MMA type events? I'm assuming its because they do not believe in that kind of competition or something. I still think it would be cool to see.

They'd be better off not training anything at all.
The only people that gave me a hard time wre Mousid who at the time was European champion and Gerard Cordeau who compete in the first UFC ( was in the final against Gracie)
And I'm not competition minded at all, I train for myself, not to compete with others
People with a simular amount of traininghours have never given me any problems
Now if a style can be crap and I would be better of not training at all, then what does that make me? a super talent ?( no Way jose)
I don't think so
BTW did you know that Fred Rooyers a former World champion is a Wado Karateka too and also made an easy switch to MT Kickboxing and Savate?

1) You said "you get me any yello bamboo or wado ryu guy and put them up against...actually... almost anybody else" sound like sying something about Wado to me
2&3 Nah not by a long shot, I think my Wado training gave a good base for crosstraining

dutch Kickboxing pioneers didn't start because Karate was no good, they just didn't like the way it was refereed, a KO is clear and can't be denied was their saying ( another group just didn't have the control to do well in non/semi contact fights namely Chakuriki)
And then they had to fight in France were they would lose even if they totaly dominated their opponent ( nationalistic refereeing)
same happened in the UK
In the EU people do Martial Arts for sport, because it is fun, only a minority does it just for Self Defence

B)Don't kid yourself, Meph. They're just as into fame, money, and recognition as any MMA star out there, and the tours and stuntshows prove that. You can choose to believe that the monks are just living a simple Buddhist life, but if you want me to believe it, you'll have to show me where it says in Buddhism that part of living simply is travelling the world and showing off.
If they really were as invincible as you think they are, MMA would be a piece of cake.
B) Buddhism was supposed that of detachment

Most of the demonstrations don't involve actually hurting someone. One of the stresses of Kung Fu is that you only hurt someone when you absolutely have to. Competing in martial arts usually involves hurting someone when you don't have to, though the presence of monks in competitive martial arts is slowly increasing because of the recent leniency of the temple.
