  • Is my kung fu class lame?

    Hi,

I've been going to this praying mantis class for over 6 months now and we're working on the second form, a saber form. During that time there has been almost no partner drills, reaction drills, self-defense applications or even drilling of basics. They go through the stances during warmup but I still haven't seen a basic "one-two" combination. It's been pretty much a forms class so far and I don't feel like I've gained any usable skills. The class is only once per week so that probably slows it down and I'm not sure how most tcma schools progress so I'd like to get your reactions.

I've been thinking of going to a silat class in the area. I know the instructor is very talented and is a great guy. He also has a lot of hands-on training in his class.

We did a two person drill last night! Kind of a basic little trapping drill but it was fun.

If you enjoy learning forms and that's what you want to do than you're probably in the the right place and more power to you. Just one basic trapping drill in six months If you're trying to learn how fight that sounds like a horrendous waste of your time.

No no no! You all don't understand!

If he perseveres with this type of training for about ten years he can then progress to the next level. Then he will be waving his legs about a little higher and his fees will go up.

If you have a silat school (which one?) in the area, want more "hands-on" training and don't mind contact then why are you learning kung fu? Check the silat school out. I see nothing wrong in asking the instructor about what his emphasis is in training, and see how he responds to your expectations. if he is a decent guy, he'll be honest with you, if he gives you the wrong vibe, go elsewhere. Beware of contracts!

In the chinese system they are sometimes tight with the knowledge. They don't need your money and sometimes they weed out a lot of people they feel don't "Fit in" Something in your character may be red flagging the instructor or he may just be testing your commitment and dedication.

I've heard of that but I don't think it's the case. I'm going to the level 1 class (3 levels total) and am just following along with the rest of the class. Everyone works on the same stuff.

No, but it looks like fun.

Is there a way to download those videos on to your hard drive? I'm on a dial up connection and it takes like an hour for them to load, if I want to watch it again later on I have to wait another hour for it to load again.

It's actually a jkd school but there's a guy who's certified under Herman Suwanda and he has a silat class. He's kind of a little guy but I've seen the way he tosses around people twice his size.

I think I'll end up there but I kind of want to finish the saber form we're working on because I've been curious about the chinese saber for a long time.
