Anyone do this kind of Martial Arts? There is a school down the street from my house. Only one close enough to ride a bike to and whatnot while my car is out for the count. Is this worth taking? Would it help me at all? If my goal is mma?

Al Moore's Shou Shu was once just a Northern California thing, but has gone south (Beaumont) and into other states. It is a good self defense Kung Fu/Kenpo system, but probably not a good choice for MMA and it doesn't claim to be. It is an animal system based on seven animals. I don't knock anyone's art but some of the claims concerning Shou Shu's history are open to question, to say the least. The good Shou Shu guys can fight, so you don't have to worry about their historical claims to learn the fighting part. You will have to get the good ground work elsewhere, unless the school in Beaumont has incorporated it.

I would visit the Shou Shu School in Beaumont and Master Angel Velasquez' Black Tiger Kung Fu Academy on Ramsey in Banning and see if either of them is for you. I have personally met Master Velasquez and he is a good Kung Fu teacher. I like his Five Animal System. It is long bike ride from Beaumont, but studying a martial arts system is a huge committment, so you might as well begin that committment with a long bike ride, and begin praying for a car that runs.

Thanks for the input, I have heard of the Black Tiger Academy and will check it out for sure. I do plan on doing jiu jitsu in yucaipa at United Brazilian Jiu Jitsu if you have heard anything about them I could use some input too. That's when I get a working car though. I do some boxing right now but I just wanted to get some good basis for kicks and whatnot. Thanks again for the input.

I know the school in Yucaipa you are talking about. I believe it is in the strip mall at the corner of Yucaipa Blvd. and Fifth Street. I don't really know anything about it though. Sam Marcellini runs the BJJ school in Moreno Valley (Marcellini's Martial Arts Academy) in the strip mall located at the corner of Indian and Sunnymead Blvd. He also teaches Shorin Kung Fu. He has a very good reputation with the students who have studied under him. That school would be worth visiting. I know Royce Gracie conducted a clinic there within the past year. Hope this helps.

                New Information

                ABOUT GRANDSHIFU SUTHERBY

After leaving the military in 1971, Sutherby moved to central California. Anxious to continue his studies in the martial arts, he started researching the schools in the area. He hoped to find a studio that taught something similar to what he learned overseas.

He found Moore's Karate, overseen by Da Shifu Al Moore, Sr. At that time, Da Shifu Moore taught Kempo, and Sutherby studied this for the first year. Then Da Shifu Moore created the art of Shou Shu,

turning away from the hardness of the external styles to focus instead on the softer movement of the internal styles. Sutherby was privileged to both witness and be a part of this change. After studying with Da Shifu Moore and other senior black belts, Sutherby obtained his 1st degree black belt.

At the end of 1978, he had to make a career move to Oregon and so he was forced to end his studies with Da Shifu Al Moore
