  • TCMA and Lion Dancing

It is said that to be a true TCMA you must know how to play the drums, cymbals and lion dance. Its nice to get some into some of the culture and your fitness level will jump to the next level however is this tradition becoming a thing of the past?
The division between the 2 are growing more apart these days, TCMA schools focus more towards fighting and lion dancing organisations are formed without any elements of stances and move purposes.
Do you guys go to schools that teach both?
Do you think TCMA schools should focus more on the whole package rather than just fighting?

My old kung fu school had a lion dance squad. It's very cool stuff, and lots of fun to watch. However, one of the reasons that I left that school was that there was serious talk of making lion dance mandatory for all students. As much as I enjoy watching others perform it just doesn't have a place in my training goals because it won't help me against an opponent. As much as I respect lion dance on it's own merits if I wanted dancing lessons I'd go to a dance studio. Do you practice lion dance? If you have clips of your school doing a lion dance demo I'd enjoy seeing them.

My school does traditional kung fu, dragon dancing and lion dancing. Right now we are going crazy with all the performances for the new year.

Lion dancing isn't just about the "dance". Although you will not learn how to "fight" an opponent through lion dancing it is excellent for endurance, strength and stance training. It is not the only way to train in these areas, but it is a good way to contribute to your kwoon and your sifu.
