Well, kung fu does translate to skill acquired In, so If you spent some years working on using salt and pepper In a fight....I guess that could be considered kung fu.

Very true. Mastery of a skill is a mastery of its own form of Kung Fu.

Just out've curiosity, how many other arts have you "mastered" to make a comment like that?

Never seen good Kung Fu in real action. Real Kung Fu is rarely seen now days. Kung fu training?? Expect constant abuse and no immediate returns for the first 3 to 5 years. I mean you don't even get the immediate satisfaction of hitting bags or entertainment of sparring with your buddies. People want to be entertained...simple as that. Kung fu can't offer that like MMA or "modern", "cage proven" fighting methods. Who would have the right mind to train like they used to these days? You are better off buying some mace or pepper spray or a knuckle buster, a tonfa, a baseball bat or better still a taser. Testing ground for kung fu in the streets? Is one willing to risk being stabbed, mangled or shot? Is there a need in the current society? Go out and enjoy a beer with your mates, instead of being constantly obsessed with mystery. What we know about fighting now is from films and competitive matches, which we have chosen to adhere to. Consider Kung fu to be raisins, when you mix turd with raisins, you still only get turd at the end of the day. The combative skills of Kung Fu will not be pushed beyond it's known limit these days. It gets more diluted every generation in peaceful times. There is no need for street combat, no need for combative elements of Kung Fu. Our intent is less aggressive and our forms gets more abundant, more pretty, more out of context. Most concepts never made it through the previous generations, they simply vanished with the old masters......

I agree with most of this.

How unfortunate that we still don't understand how loyalty to one system is a hindrance.

It really depends on how you mean by loyalty to ones system. I believe in looking outside for different angles. But not mixing techniques. I think that just cause too much distraction. At the end of the day, we are all training for the same skills. The manifestation of these skills will look different.

I agree people will all do the same technique different. That's why we have so many styles. Some do it large frame, some small, and some in between.

Some people are smoother than others, some make one move in a form look like 3 and some make the whole form look like one long movement.

It's good to train with different people and styles to see where your form fits into an opponents doors.

...real gongfu is like a cooler emblem. Behind it you get hit not only by the long vehicle but also by the whole history of mechanical engineering, the invention of the wheel and everything else.
A master represents one strand of universal/timeless Gongfu DNA. His associates are innumerable.
To be able to answer what is what we need to answer to ourselves who we have become.
The reward for devotion to gongfu is the key to happiness. This key is individual and it depends on natural principles and how one incorporates these principles into ones lifestyle.
When one practices gongfu the assignment is change and transformation. The mission is revolution through evolution.
The old masters communicated with creation. They moved to the speed of the rising sun and to the viscosity of uterine liquids around a growing fetus.
Their enlightment was an unbroken influx. Their understanding was like the upcoming of a new star. Their life and the lives of everybody else, the life of everything was interwoven. There was no seperation, no dissent, no doubt. Action was the way of the old masters and their actions were not based on words but on sound matter.
I want to contribute with a translation of a famous Kongzi quote (junzi wu suo zheng, bi ye she hu).
I am basing my interpretation on the hermetic arts: The guardian of all children born and unborn trods on emptiness. He/She transforms all spears into slow-worms. His bow and arrow obliterate breathing obstructions.
Archetypically all gongfu eventually becomes witchcraft.
                          Wazaam!!!

This is the kind of ignorant crap that drives people away from what kung fu actually is.First of kung fu is a concept, not a style. The term kung fu can be applied to anything that is honed and practiced and perfected through long and tedious, slow evolution of any set of movements.

All the shit about the universe and all powerfulness is crap. The truth of the matter is that what you see as "magic" is just efficiency of motion. Someone has practiced movements so much and understand them so thoroughly that they can do the most complicated things and make it seem like the did nothing.

No abrcadabra BS mumbo jumbo, just a regular person doing what they have do over and over 10,000 times, till they become that movement.

                              Yep.

Many "Sifus" have held back the development of their students. Some through their neurosis, lack of competence or selfishness. Sad to think so many young men have wasted so much of their time. I guess this is what you mean by loyalty to ones system.

Pretty much. A lot of people are guarding the rice bowl now a days. Instead of advancing the art and admitting that the ideas behind fighting are all conceptual, they still stick to the commandant that it "has to be done this way because that's how it's always been done".
