  • IP man on Chinese martial arts..

He is the legend.. Have any one here seen this movie? well this movie Ip Man is the first film to be based on the life of the martial artist. After a first attempt to portray Ip's life on screen resulted in the project being abandoned, producer Raymond Wong developed his own film with full consent from Ip's sons, and had filmmakers head to Foshan, to research Master Ip's life. Ip Chun, Ip Man's eldest son, served as a consultant for the film. Principal photography for Ip Man began in March 2008 and ended in August; filming took place in Shanghai, which was used to architecturally recreate Foshan. Ip Man was released in Hong Kong on 18 December 2008, [1] receiving widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. Following its success, Ip Man was nominated for 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, winning awards for Best Picture and Best Action Choreography. A sequel to the film is currently in development, slated for a 2010 theatrical release.

The movie is a complete work of fiction, not unlike Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. However, it is intended to capture the spirit of the man and the part involving him knocking the barrel out of the chamber of a revolver was true, according to his son. The rest of the film was not, but it was entertaining. I own the Hong Kong release and absolutely love it.

Sammo Hung did the fight choreography for this and Donnie Yen was top notch, even though he was in pain doing these scenes all the way through. Unfortunately, the character of Bruce Lee is going to be played by a ten year old boy, so again, we're getting fiction with the sequel as well. Bruce didn't start studying martial arts until he was 13 years old and he was likely a little older than that when he trained with Yip Man (Ip Man). I'm sure the film will try to show it like Bruce was a private student, which he wasn't, or an outstanding Wing Chun student, which he also wasn't - he just really loved to fight.

However, Sammo is back on the job, God willing his heart continues to hold up. He had heart surgery during the filming of the sequel - he eats the wrong foods, smokes, and he's morbidly obese. Yen has said when he's 50, he's 46 now, he plans to retire from films due to the injuries he's sustained over the years, so enjoy this film when it comes out. If you don't already have it, you can buy it here:

Oooh, thanks for the heads up. Looks like it is being released on 28th Sept here in the UK. Did not know about Sammo's heart either. But no surprise - proof that being an active overweight person is little better than an inactive one!

I don't know about that. Like I said, he eats the wrong foods, he's at an unhealthy weight, and he's a heavy smoker. He's probably a walking time bomb living on borrowed time.

Yen started smoking again due to this role, not sure why he had to smoke just because Ip Man did, but that's Hong Kong for you. If he manages to quit again, he should have a long career behind the camera when he's done with action films in front of the camera. Yen mentioned that doing the Wing Chun was absolutely painful because of previous injuries on past films and they were taking it's toll on his body. Sammo on the other hand will be lucky if he sees his 60th birthday.
