This whole thread is starting to humor me. I have been fighting in MT (in ring) for 2 years. I train with 5 other styles who cross-train MT but are so called experts in other arts. MT can easily be learned, can easily be used in ANY application. It may take 12 months to become average, but when you do your offens and defense is applicable in any situation. I don't get into many situations outside of the gym or ring, but if I did I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU KNOW, I will kick you, and hit you, not 1 or 2 ways like you guys are talking about but 12 to 15 ways. The funny thing is, and this sums most of this whole issue up. If you learn ALL aspects of MT, and how to use ALL 8 Limbs properly the damage that can be inflicted is massive. These chiniese fighters would have the advantage. No elbows or knees. Take the real fighter and just tie both hands behind is back. The reason they do this is becasue in a applicable situation where someone that knows how to use these does properly they could not compete. So in my book when you talk about stand-up fighting don't tell me other arts can beat a MT fighter and then in the same sentence tell me there are no knees elbows, ect. Limiting the weapons God gave you is not a true fight.

Hmmmn, seem like many MA train on more than 1 or 2 ways

The funny thing is I havent seen a human with 8 limbs

A couple of Chinese I know use everything they can. So do non-Chinese

Could not compete, per not applicable in the ring? What are you saying?

Yeah, the old this vs that thread. Always popping up and giving many theories.

I see this debate has gone on for some time, I my self have trained in Karate for over 20 years, and have taught many 1000's students, we have won regional, state, national and world chanpionships, in non contact and contact tournaments, I have had many students from many styles come train with us, I enjoy training with other styles, be it Karate, Kung Fu, or kick boxing, etc., but at no time do I say we are the best, as I feel we have things to offer each other, even after 20 years I am still learning, when a diffrent style enters our Dojo, to me its like an exchange of cultchers, they show me things I show them, therefore, our knowledge continues to grow.
We cover many things as well as traditional Karate, we are heavy into grapling and kick boxing, and the only weapon we train with is the Arnis(escrima) sticks, as this is the only weapon garanteed to be found any where, be it a stick, umberella, rolled up news paper, if you get my drift.
To say Mauy Thai is the ultimate Martial Arts by degrading another style, then you have already lost the debate, the only problem with a lot of other Martial Arts is that they have become, watered down, speaking as a MA Teacher, you are constantly, concerned about, injury to students, and your insurance, every one is out to sue every one for every thing, people have to go to work the next day, in an ideal world, we could train, kick and punch the crap out of each other, and spring out of bed like new the next day.
Some have made comments on Kata, in Karate, the secrets are locked away, within the movements, so I have been told for over twenty years, and we have had many a training session, going through these, but I would rather practice the techniques on live opponets, than do Kata, but kata has its place, stances, breathing, balance, coordination, focus and flexability, not to mention disapline, its exspecialy great for new students to the Martial Arts, I'm a lover of all martial Arts, to put down another style to lift your self up high, only degrades the style you worship so much.

One should not honor only one's own martial art and condemn the martial art of others, but one should honor others' martial arts for this or that reason. So doing, one helps one's own martial art grow and renders service to the martial arts of others too. Having to consummate all as unique in whole. In acting otherwise, one digs the grave of one's own martial art and also does harm to other martial arts. Within confines of comparison for mere belittlement and not certain appreciations. It is natural to appreciate one's own for this or that reason. However, in other words, whosoever honors their own martial art and condemns others, does so indeed through the devotion to their own thinking, "I will glorify my martial art". But on the contrary, in so doing injures their own more gravely. To honor all martial arts is a noble example of tolerance, understanding, and the pursuit of excellence

Your friend ought to be careful......
However, the "Lakefrint Arear" that UNO is located, was my birth/stomping grounds. It is a nice area to go to college, but the surrounding areas are bad.

Originally posted by TracyKarate"Muay Thai" is overrated. It's practitioners I'm sure are very tough, but does the average person in need of self-defense on the street have the time or desire to constantly work at toughening their shins and throwing hundreds of kicks and knees a day? It is a "sport", and therefore it's techniques are more "sportive" than "combative".
no muay thai was not designed as a sport, it was used in the military in the 1600's if im not mistaken that is its origin,
muay thai is a very effective style as are the chinese styles, the man makes the style not the other way around,
i train in both cinese styles and muay thai, they are both good mauy thai is very good if you are looking to get better with your knees and elbows,
peace.
