The main problem with E-Asian martial arts...

is the fact that they don't compete with other styles. sure people will give me some half arsed excuses such as "our style is to lethal to be used in competitions". What a bunch of bullcrap. Open competitions have been a part of chinese, japanese, and korean history. Competitions sponsered by rich merchants, one style or the government were common. Practioners of differnt styles came and competed against each other, that's why their styles stayed "freash" and continued to evolve. I am sick and tired of stylists saying "oh since we can't do this or that" they won't compete. SICK OF IT.

I don't agree with you for a number of reasons. First, you don't know enough about Asian Martial Arts, because if you did, you'd know that they do hold competitions between different styles, and have done so for centuries... Most of which had no rules. If you're implying that they don't compete in MMA... Then the same can be said about boxing, wrestling and karate... MMA is an accumulation of martial arts, not kung-fu, karate or boxing. Boxing is boxing with boxing rules. You don't see a MMA guy competing in kung-fu tournaments, or boxing on espn...

Secondly, different combat systems serve different purposes. Self-defense programs are not sport-oriented and few would expert a self-defense instructor to win a UFC Championship.

Lastly, your opinion is naive... Judo, karate, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai and elements of kung-fu are East Asian Martial Arts that are integrated in MMA all the time.

i train escrima. ufc won't let it in. my art is stick and knife, now if any nhb guy wants to go against me allowing me to use my training i'm more than willing. the ufc/pride are games/sports. real competitons should be done in private between two challengers who are willing to take it all the way, or esle shut up about what art is the best.

There are many mixed style fighting competitions in Hong Kong (I have videos taken) and also in Australia (because I live there, not that Australia is special or anything) between professional fighters of all styles who want to come. They are quite small and not televised, but they exist. Chinese martial arts schools are dedicated contributor to these fights, and one school dominates steadily against all other stylists.

Just because it isn't in the mass media or on Fox doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I think there are alot of martial artists in non-mainstream styles that are really good at what they do - pentjak silat, kenpo, wing tsun etc. and are devistating fighters.

They don't get in the lime light, but they exist.

Ok, so you're talking about K-1 and you are asking why there are no Eastern Asian martial arts represented among its competitors?

I don't really follow K-1, but my guess is that you've got plenty of people with MT, TKD, and Karate backgrounds. So that would constitute an East Asian prescence. But in case you aren't convinced here you go straight from the K1 website:
"Karate, Kickboxing, Tae kwon do and Kung fu are among the martial arts upon which K-1 is founded."



The founder of K1 even had a competition back in the 80s of karate vs. kung fu. So, what are you talking about?

There have been MMAr's who are willing to do both. Go into strickign tournaments such as K-1 and join PRIDE. Such as Crocop. IMHO the money is just not there in thailand. Imean you get up to 60thousand dollars for winning in K-1.

They tried to bring TKD and Kung fu guys in but no one is willing. IIRC there was one San Shou guy in a Max tourney.

Problems

You're talking about all the Chinese secrets stuff right Jules? It's bullox. I'm Chinese and people still try that game with me. Stupid. Big lie is when Sifu says I show people 1 way but do it for real a different way. Tttttwwwwppp!

Most of the Chinese stuff taught today is only the shell. Why? Not because too deadly Sifu don't want to show it. Too deadly Sifu doesn't know it so he can't show. HA!!!

Just because a guy has slanted eyes and an accent doesn't mean he knows diddly squat about kung fu. Maybe a little from family but not a Sifu and no way a Master.

Still some good fighting in some places. Full contact with no rules. Some interesting things about these fights. They last only a few seconds. 1 guy gets the snot knocked out of him or thrown down and quits. Not like west boxing where they keep going and going. Sometimes people get hurt and once now and then a guy dies. Not often but sometimes. More like test of skill. Getting hit and hurt means the other guy is better. No sense keeping on as he won by those ways of looking at it.
