Tai chi's great...for all sorts of things...seriously, I get it...but NOT for self defense. You'd be better off knowing nothing in a fight than knowing tai chi.
Were you abused by a taijiquan practitioner as a child?
isnt there a combat form of tai chi? ive seen some video clips of combat tai chi demonstrations, were the practitioners fought at high speeds and used weapons too like swords and whatnot. people diss tai chi alot, but there is a combat aspect to it which is much different from what u see people doing in the park.
"Be alert. Be alive in the moment. Don’t imagine anyone who comes and asks you to ‘push’ or ‘spar’ will keep to a format, or even stay barehanded" my ba gua teacher !!
... this is like banging your head against a brick wall!
People hear what they want to hear, see what they want to see, think what they want to think.
Instead of doing this, GO AND see a reputable Tai Chi guy like Su Dong Chen - ask him to show you how Tai Chi stacks up as a Martial Art. Come back and give us your result. You will either be soar, broken or typing from the Hospital internet Cafe - it is that simple.
There arent 'combative' Tai chi forms .... Tai Chi IS a combative art - end of story .... what there are in addition to this are modern, wu shu and HEALTH forms practice - which rarely resemble any part of Authentic, Traditional Tai Chi Chuan.
You are using these yoga like westernised or health based classes as the rule, when they resemble the art of tai chi in Name only.
ANYONE ...... anyone out there.. ....... nope just appears to be that brick wall again.
We need an old style no rules kumite to test the most effective arts against one another. UFC is a great show more and more comparable to WWE every day. When people start using these type of compitetions to judge the validity of a style there is something wrong. There are some styles that are just not suitable for competition because most or all of the techniques have one purpose to inflict irreparible injurys and death.
OK, I think you all missed my point. The problem is that their is so much crap out there that people have become skeptical until they see it. The problem is compounded by the fact that there are so many that claim this and that who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
Example: someone claims they are a Tai Chi (or insert other art) master because they rented a few videos and went to a seminar gets beat by the average hoodlum on the street. therefore now everyone thinks this art is crap becasue they never see the real deal. Those who are proficient are few in number and most are reluctant to show their skill.
I met a few martial artist that I would love to see get in the ring. They just aren't interested. Some feel like they would be whoring their art by doing so.

Yeah...maybe kali and silat, which teach a whole bunch of really, REALLY nasty stuff....but not tai chi. "Internal power" and Chi stuff is for science fiction fans...
Why would you compare a fighting sport to fake wrestling? Do you compete in MMA? If not, you have absolutely no grounds to make that sort of assumption. When I put myself at risk of injury and I see people I train with almost get choked out.....a little bit different from choreographed dance moves don't you think? Tai chi practitioners have as much credibility as people who say they practice magic.
Yes i have Competed in MMA. I said its begining to resemble WWE I have also Studied Tai chi chaun Its a Lot more effective than people think it is.......
I think that's a blatant generalization of MMA competition. PRIDE is excellent, UFC is becoming more of a grappling tournament than anything, but it is still a combat sport...not an organized routine. Several of the smaller competitions are beginning to focus more on people that are odd characters, so in a way, I guess that draws some sort of parallell...but I don't get the comparisan...please indulge me...
Why would you think that Mixed Martial arts are anything like fake wrestling?
One word RULES (I know that they are needed in sport fighting) My Point was that you can't judge a styles effectivness on UFC Because of rules and referee's and yes it is still a long ways from WWE but it has begun to show some simularity. I guess maybe I am a little disillusioned with it because i am missing 3 front teeth permant lip scars and a fractured skull because rules prevented me from using my style to its fullest capacity.Sorry If I hit a nerve I'm still your biggest fan
