Tai Chi is a Martial Art!

Tai Chi is an internal martial art which means there is no application it is only forms because you use the forms to strengthen your body internaly. If your body is very strong internally your body will automaticly react to any attack on the street. There is no application because your body defends itself automaticaly. You can use tai chi as a martial art or a benefit to your health it all depends on the person and what he wants. This is my oppinion of Tai chi I might not be right. I use tai chi for both a benifit to my health and a martial art.

Conclussion?

What a very very long discussion! There won't be an end to pros and conts. Why don't we just discuss the strengths and weaknesses of Tai Chi, instead, in order that we can have better understanding of what should be understood and done. Sorry, just a suggestion.

strengths = speed, explosive power, footwork, multiple weapons (hands, fists, shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, feet, head butts) stand up grappling, multiple opponent work etc.

here tai chi form opening applied at a more realistic speed. pauls arm didnt work too well after this shot between the bicep and tricep - not a planned application as we were working from suprise attacks.

Weaknesses = dilution of the original art due to many factors, including - its health benefits, the communist Chinese government, western marketing and mcDojo's, mystical attibutes due to mis translation and misunderstanding, lack of hard working schools, lack of real time work. These factors are not representative of Tai chi Chuan but of the situation that tai chi chuan finds itself in.

I am not a big Tai Chi practitioner anymore as my main focus is now Xing Yi and Ba gua, but i have felt my teachers tai chi skill and it is something i / most would find very difficult to overcome, after one or two shots you are generally on the floor. No sparring, no messing around, just fast powerful work.

and more effecient than any tai chi park practiced crap.
Tai chi's great...for all sorts of things...seriously, I get it...but NOT for self defense. You'd be better off knowing nothing in a fight than knowing tai chi.
