Wow, another Nashvillian (is that right?) I just moved here myself a few weeks ago. If you're looking for straight FMA, then I can't tell you any for sure. I know that my MT class has an additional class on Thursday nights that teaches "combatives" which involves Arnis, JKD, and some wing-chun. The class itself is in Hermitage and I know the combatives has its own school about 45 minutes south of the city past Antioch.

Actually, I go to college in Murray, KY but I'm from Nashville. Didn't get interested in MA until this semester though. Just trying to plan ahead for the summer. I drive about an hour each way for 2 nights a week of Jun Fan/Kali in Paducah currently.

I feel for ya. I was going to college in Stillwater, OK, but taking Ju Jitsu in Oklahoma City which was about an hour away. If you love what you do, it's hard to pass up learning even if the class is far away.

The worst part, I can't find anyone in Murray who's interested in anything past Tae Kwon Do to practice with outside of class. I can do some shadow boxing, but it's kind of hard for me to figure out how to practice kali and trapping solo. (I don't exactly put up flyers though, just ask friends I already know)

Oh well, I'll be in Nashville over the summer, hopefully with a fresh paramedic ticket to get me a summer job. Could you tell me a little bit about the MT gym you train at? If you don't want to post it, my e-mail's michael(at)whitehatresearch.net

            Thanks!

The website for the school is www.wardog.us. It's taught out of the Hermitage Fitness Center in one of their aerobics rooms. It's pretty much straight MT with an emphasis on self defense more than competition. We do very little shadowboxing in class and most all of our work is against mits.

The class is taught on Tuesday (8-9), Thursday (7-8) and Saturday (12-2). On thursday the guy comes in to teach the combatives which is some JKD, Arnis, Wing Chun type things. There should be a link to the combatives school from the main website. I believe its called TCA. Saturday's are a little more open right now and we do a little bit of JKD mixed with MT and we also spend the last hour doing free sparring (MT, Stick, Knife, Ground Work, NHB if you so chose.)

              Hope that helps.

That's perfect! My parents live in Hermitage!

                I really appreciate it.

(You can't see it, but I'm actually Snoopy Dancing for joy in front of the computer)

Hey, this is my first post at defend.net, I have heard of Guro McCleary, he is suposed to be very good. Outside of Philipino MA, the Metro Police Dept in Nashville is supposed to have one of the best training groups in the state. I have not heard of anything else that is similiar in training methods or curriculum. The MPD does a lot of whatever works, kind of unofficial JKD(if there is such a thing as official). I kind of lucked out in having a member of the Jujitsu club I'm in move away, and then come back with two years of constant Kali/eskrima training under his belt. He studied in Charleston under Kathy Gibson. Hope I have helped you. I'm not sure hw you could contact the MPD, I know about them through a friend of my Jujitsu instructer.

                    nashville ma

                    Greetings,
I'm a recent arrival here in music city. I have an intrest in doing some fitness/self defense. Do any of you know anything about the David Deaton school in Brentwood or the style they teach (wado ryu karate)?
                    thanks

It depends on what you want to take. I really like my MT school. And there's a Ju Jitsu/ Isshin Ryu Karate place near my house that's not too bad.

David Deaton's school seems REALLY commercialised. I don't know much about the style, but the fact that David Deaton has a huge picture of himself in the phone book and his own infomercial kind of makes me want to stay away. With that being said, it looks like its focused around fitness a whole lot so you'll probably get a good workout.
