  • Dos Manos questions

In dos manos training is the stick held two-handed at the base like a sword or is it held like a short staff with the hands wherever the need arises?

Typically how long is the stick used in dos manos work?

    Thanks in advance.

many variations oif two hand techniques from mimicking staff work, to wielding it like a sword, depends on region, style, and personal preference. The DOS MANOS I beleive is actually the brainchild of Hock Hocheims KNife fighting congress, and is weilded like a riot baton with a hand at each end, and probably the same length as one maybe 30'. I am only saying what I beleive to be true, so I could be wrong. maybe one of hocks guys here could help...

Hmmmm, here might be the problem with my question. I do not know anything about Hocheim, and I was using the term for any two handed stick technique shorter than an actual staff. I saw clips on the Dog Brothers site and thought that all two handed stick work was referred to as "dos manos". I guess my question was just poorly written which may explain the lack of responses.

So, is there a two-handed sword in the Filipino arsenal? Is it a curved blade or straight blade?

There ARE many types of swords throughout the archipelago, I think in this case you would be looking at a Panabas or chopping type weapon.

              Dos Manos

              Hi Bligh

The Dos manos techniques do refer to the 2 handed use of the stick and are not exclusive to any particular FMA system. It is taught under the name of 'De larve' in the Black-eagle system and there are a full range of drills, locks blocks takedowns blah, blah, taught from this grip.
It is used primarily at close range, in confined space, or against a heavier weapon. There is no standard stick length used for these techniques, though if the stick is too short, it starts to become impracticle.

              Hope this Helps

Dos Manos is a general term used to represent any two-handed applications on a single stick. W. Hock Hochheim developed a system based on the riot baton and long gun which he named DMS or Dos manos System. Later Hock revised the DMS curriculum to include single hand on single stick work and he renamed the revised course, SDMS or Solo (Single) and Dos (Double) Manos System. In Hock's curriculum the student learns to use the stick in all grip variations including both hands on one end of the stick in a baseball bat & katana fashion.

To be a complete stick fighter the student must know how to use the stick with one and two hands and know how to use it in all planes of combat.

                Hope this helps,

In Ilustrisimo we hold it like a sword. The stick is between hip hight to waist hight
