basic terminology question

I hear people using the term "open position" and "closed position", and I don't think my teacher ever used those terms. Anyone care to quickly explain?
I want to assume open means you have a stick on either shoulder (cobb cobb), closed means one is folded under in backhand position (heaven 6). But I'm not certain that's what they mean, seeing how we already have terms for those instances.
anyone?

    abierta = open
    serrada = closed

    say you are right handed. when you hold the stick on your right side, it is open; when you hold your stick on your left side with your right hand, it's closed. your right hand crosses your body, therefore closed.

    you are right on the positions when it's double sticks.

    HTH.

      I appreciate it. Now I can be positive I know what I'm being told when people use the terms.
