What are some of the best drills for increasing hand speed?

    B.

    Hello,

Developing increased hand speed involves several training attributes including physical conditioning, perception, reaction time etc. A simple drill to start to increase your hand speed includes explosive push ups, with a clap between leaving the floor and hands returning to the floor. As you become more comfortable with this exercise add 2 claps before your hands return to the floor, then have a partner squat infront of you with a focus mitt, on his call you explode up from the floor reach out and touch the mitt, then return to the push up position.

This will get you started!! Have fun!!

      Faster than a steel trap...

Guro Steve, Good stuff! Two claps? That takes some doing!

As a youngster we occasionally did a bit of trapping, coyotes mostly with varied success. I know, steel traps are inhumane, spare me. But they are mechanical spring steel activated jaws that close VERY FAST once the padle has been tripped.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DUPLICATE THIS EXPERIMENT Steel traps will break small bones faster that you can blink!

Smarter than a stick? Never try to spring a steel trap with your fingers!

O-kay now that I've said that, I'll tell you that it can be done if you're really, REALLY FAST! There were two techniques my brother and I used. Before we attempted this with our bare hands we had practiced with knives and discovered that it was posable to trip the trap and "disengage" before the jaws closed on the blade. In and out. This is the slower of the two successful techniques we tried. Fingers straight in and back out. SNAP! And the "swipe through" was just a slash that comes in on one side and exits on the opposite side.

Steel traps are dangerous! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRIP A STEEL TRAP WITH YOUR FINGERS!!! (in case you missed it the first time)

After we actually became proficient at keeping our digits we invented new ways to test our "skill" (LOL) Hang the trap from a branch and spin or swing it as you attempt to trip the paddle and keep clear of the steel jaws!

Think you're fast? Think you're accurate? Think you have good timing? DON'T TRY THIS!!!

Unorthadox and primitive training methods should not be completely discounted as invalid or unworthy of "art"? Never really thought about the martial implications untill years later playing with knives (again).

        Hello Tant01,

Two claps is easy, with some practice, the harder one is clapping behind your back from the explosive push up! (i'll add a clip up to my website asap)

The steel trap is pretty cool! (crazy but cool!!)

Sure, "easy" untill you're on forty or so! LOL I used to do that kind of stuff more back in the day as it were. Rock ckimbing was one of my favorite workouts! Behind your back, huh? I see me landing on my face just trying that...

Boxers speed bag is one of the best ways to improve hand speed. They sell for about $39.99

It took me a couple minutes to find where the pushups were, so I put up a link for easier access. I hope you don't mind. Pretty good site. I see that you do about 5 reach-out, and 1 behind the back. How many behind the back do you usually do in a set? I've never tried them before, but am adding them to my training. Anything that developes explosive power should be practiced.
                  Thanks

                    Hello HtTKar,

Thanks for putting up the link to the files. Currently I have well over 40 exercises and drills for attribute development filmed, about half of them are clipped for my Members site upgrade this month.

When I am drilling for hand speed (with these exercises), I usually work in sets of 10. (just an easy # to remember) So for a quick workout, 10 PU with clap, 10 PU with reach out (5 each side), then finish off with 10 behind the back. I vary my drills and exercises alot, to prevent boredom and staleness from setting in. But these drills presented here will help you increase your hand speed with constant and consistent practice.

                    Tant01 - Trust me I won't tell!!!

Hardball - The speed bag is great to increase hand coordination and speed!

                      Greetings All,

Guro Steve has one of the fastest handspeeds that I've encountered...believe me I've sparred him enough.

If I may add a "supplement" to "imroving" handspeed.........

No matter how fast your hands are, it will be nullified if you TELEGRAPH your strike............

The most common way to do this is to "pre-empt" your strike by moving your BODY/SHOULDERS first.......this is a dead giveaway, that you are just about to launch an offense.

Next time you spar someone.......keep an eye on their shoulders. Most likely, there will be a shift forward or a shift in weight, just before they attack.

So to avoid this........I get my guys to ensure that the HAND initiates the attack FOLLOWED by the forward body motion.....

For some reason, picking up the hand motion is not as obvious to your opponent as the body or shoulders.........by moving the hand first......by the time your opponent registers your BODY motion......you're already half way there.

Your eyes basically percieve two motions easily, up/down, and side-to-side. Movement is easier to see than distance. Your eyes also refresh which takes a little while. If you look at an unmoving object, your eyes will stabilize. It's hard to explain, but the explanation is on this website. So if you are moving just your hands in a straight-forward motion without moving up/down or side-to-side, it's possible that by the time your opponent sees your hand move, it's too late. The hand is always quicker than the eye.
